Cottle Stellar in First Career Varsity Win for Monomoy Nine

HARWICH – Pitching at the varsity level as a sophomore can be daunting in and of itself but for Monomoy’s Owen Cottle it was smooth sailing as he pitched his Monomoy Sharks to a 2-1 win over Sturgis West Friday afternoon at Whitehouse Field.

Cottle went the distance for his first career varsity victory on the mound for Monomoy, as he struck out one, walked two and scattered three hits in seven innings of work. He needed just 76 pitches to get the job done as he induced 11 pop flies in the effort. Cottle allowed one earned run in top of the fourth after giving up a one-out single to Chris Parkins and then an RBI-double by Sturgis West first baseman Johnny Ryan.

That solo run tied things up at 1-1 in the fourth, but Cottle settled to strand two runners with one in scoring position.

His Monomoy teammates provided him all he would need to close it out in the bottom of the fifth inning.

With one man on after a leadoff walk in the fifth, Sharks’ leftfielder Christ Amezquita reached on a fielder’s choice and then leadoff man Drew Senatore (2-3) singled to put Amezquita on third.

Monomoy head coach Steve Wilson then gave the nod for the old-fashioned, tried-and-true suicide squeeze bunt to Jimmy Hinesley who laid down a beauty for the 2-1 lead and what would prove to be the game-winning run.

Sturgis West’s J.P. Labarge was no less efficient in this affair as the lanky righty scattered five hits, struck out two and walked two. Labarge allowed Monomoy one run in the bottom of the first and then the game-winner in the fifth.

Senatore got its first run in its opening at-bat when Senatore led off with a single and stole second and then came rambling home on shortstop Noah Nickerson’s line-drive base hit to left. Nickerson went 1-3 with one RBI.

Monomoy, now 5-4 on the season, heads to Cohasset on Monday (May 11) for a 4:00 pm South Shore League match-up.  Sturgis West (5-6) hopes to get back to .500 on Monday when it heads to Mashpee in a non-league contest at 4:00 pm.
