PEMBROKE – Righty Nick Couhig (Falmouth High) struck out 10 and allowed just one hit in the 2015 season-opener for Sandwich Post 188 American Legion baseball (1-0) Sunday morning in a 10-0 win over host Pembroke Post 143 at Mattakeesett Street Field.

Couhig went four innings and walked none and got himself out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to two strikeouts and a comebacker to the mound.

“He actually recorded 11 of 12 possible outs,” Post 188 head coach K.J. Kozens said.

Luke Chevalier (Northern State University) came in relief of Couhig in the fifth and struck out two.

All totaled, Post 188 banged out 13 hits en route to the five-inning affair (shortened due to mercy rule), including two apiece from Brady Doherty (Sandwich High), Drew Boli (Falmouth High), and Emmett and Gates Kelliher. Boli and Emmett Kelliher also had three RBI in the one-sided match-up.

Tyler Rondeau and Danny O’Kane also had two hits for the visitors.

Christian Nashawaty took the loss for Pembroke Post 143.

Due to the MIAA State Baseball Tournament, Barnstable Post 206 is not due to open its season until Friday, June 12 at Lowell Park against Sandwich Post 188 at 5:45 pm.
