Dolphin Tennis Girls Edge Lady Lions; Red Raider Teams Sweep Nauset; Vineyard Stays Unbeaten

SOUTH YARMOUTH – Facing a tough St. John Paul II girls’ tennis squad, an armed with only one victory on the spring, the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins turned the corner Monday afternoon with a hard-fought, 3-2 victory at home.

Dolphins’ number one singles player Tess Ciarcia defeated Lady Lions’ senior co-captain Haylee Whitely in a nailbiter after falling to Whiteley in the match’s first set, 6-2. Ciarcia came back to beat Whiteley, 6-3, and then 10-8 in a tiebreaker.

Dolphins’ number two singles player Laryssa Dumont then rode that momentum to an exhausting battle with Lady Lions’ junior co-captain Emily Canzano. Dumont beat Canzano in the first set, 6-4, then fell, 6-1, before taking the tiebreaker, 14-12.

St. John Paul II sophomore Allison Santos made it a win for the visitors at number three singles in the third match to go to a tiebreaking set as she beat Taylor McDowell, 6-1, then fell to McDowell, 7-5. IN the tiebreaker, Santos prevailed, 10-5.

Dennis-Yarmouth and St. John Paul II split the doubles action, with the Dolphins’ Victoria Liu and Rebecca Khachikian winning number one doubles 3-1 before Rachel McLellan and Jacquelyn Germani retired from competition.

At number two doubles, St. John Paul II’s Grace Goldberg and Julia Grady defeated D-Y’s Virginia Liu and Anna Bach, 6-4, 6-2.

D-Y improved to 2-9 with the victory. St. John Paul II fell to 4-7 with the loss. The Dolphins head to Barnstable on Wednesday (May 13) for a 4:00 pm match-up.

Barnstable Girls Win Toughest Match of Season vs. Nauset Warriors

Nauset Regional High’s Haley Navarro battled Barnstable’s Emma Doe down to the wire Monday afternoon at number three singles, but that was all the host Red Raider girls’ tennis team would afford its visitor en route to a 4-1 victory.

Barnstable’s Lauren Persson – in the second match of the day to go to a tiebreaker set – defeated Nauset ace Allie Dadoly, 6-1, before falling to the Warrior co-captain, 6-3. In the

tiebreaker set, Persson took the number one singles match, 6-4.

At number two singles, it was Katie Tynan who notched the win for the Red & White, 6-2, 6-3 over Nika Dadoly. Navarro fell to Doe in the first number three singles set, 6-4, but then came back to win the second set, 6-1. In the tiebreaker, Navarro prevailed, 10-7.

At number one doubles, Barnstable’s ultra-reliable duo of Taya Berler and Michaela Corwall defeated Nauset co-captains Anna Godshalk and Haley Benz, 6-1, 6-1. At number two doubles, the Red Raiders rounded things out with a win from Angelique Gray and Jenna Dennis who beat Carlisle Wheeler and Grace Haskell, 6-1, 6-1.

Barnstable climbed to 10-2 on the season and the victory clinched an MIAA South Sectional postseason berth for the Red Raiders. Nauset fell to 10-3 on the season in the non-league tennis battle, but already clinched a postseason spot over the weekend. The Warriors remain atop the Atlantic Coast League standings at 5-0.

Barnstable will host the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins on Wednesday (May 13) while Nauset hosts Marshfield the same day in a key Atlantic Coast League contest set to be held at 4:00 pm at the Orleans Elementary School.

The Vineyarders held tightly to their top, unbeaten record in the region Monday afternoon with a breezy, 5-0 win over Bishop Stang in Oak Bluffs. The Vineyarders are now 11-0 on the season.

Number one singles ace Samantha Potter defeated Stang’s Katie Vasconcelos, 6-3, 6-1, followed by a win at number two singles by Kat Roberts over Emma Mills, 6-2, 6-1. At third singles, Lizzie Williamson beat Amanda Vasconcelos, 6-1, 6-1, to make it a clean sweep in the singles’ bracket.

At number one doubles, M-V’s Charlotte Potter and Josie Iadicicco defeated Charlotte Bermarz and Emma Downes, 6-1, 6-3 and Amadine Muniz and Madison McBride took number two doubles in similar fashion, 6-3, 6-4, over Lauren Shellcross and Sarah Carney.

The Vineyarders are at Coyle Cassidy in a league contest on Wednesday, May 13, at 2:30 pm.

Barnstable Net Men Becoming Impossible to Stop

Tyler Shibles, Max Francis and Cooper Hesse each took their respective matches in decisive fashion Monday afternoon, and paced the undefeated Barnstable High boys’ tennis team (11-0) to a 5-0 win over the host Nauset Warriors (6-7).

Shibles won the number one singles match over Reed Jenkins, 6-2, 6-0, and Francis and Hesse each blanked their respective opponents, 6-0, 6-0. Francis defeated Keenyn Pombo and Hesse downed Michael Sanborn.

Donnie Brodd and Cooper Blaze defeated Ethan “Big Red” Ladue and Colton Leach, 6-1, 6-0, and at number two doubles Gabe Rourke and Matt Kaski were victorious over Ben Parkington and Mike Walsh, 6-1, 6-4.
