Downes and Sandwich Blue Knights Shut Case Down in 96-58 Road Tilt

SWANSEA — The Sandwich Blue Knights put a total of 10 men into the mix last night, all of whom scored, en route to a 96-58 win on the road at Case High School.

Senior co-captain and point guard Joey Downes scored 21 points, with fellow co-captain Scotty Reels adding a season-high 19 points to pace the well-rounded offensive effort.

But at the outset, it did not appear as if Case was going to pack up and give in. Sandwich built a 24-20 lead after the first quarter, but barely escaped the hot hand of Case’s Sam Horowitz as he drained a trifecta of three-pointers. Horowitz would finish the night, ultimately, with a game-high 23 points, but that hot hand cooled off in the second half.

The visiting Blue Knights pressured their hosts with a persistent man-to-man defense that helped Sandwich build a 46-34 lead at halftime.

“They played a tough first quarter,” Sandwich head coach Dennis Green said. “But everyone contributed in this one.”

Junior forward Andrew Galanek tacked on a solid 15 points and Mike Migliore had a huge game with 14 points to put four Blue Knights in the double-digits. Will Crowther came oof the bench for six points, followed by Ben Hines with six points, Dante Lambros with five points, Sam Whittle and Brian Wahle each with four points and John Rymsha with three points.

In spite of the score, the Blue Knights had some rough edges after so much time out of the gym in the past 10 days or so.

“We struggled for rebounds tonight. There were no double-doubles,” Coach Green said.

Sandwich, now 14-1, has its sights set on the Atlantic Coast League championship and can pull it off as early as Tuesday of next week against Falmouth. The Clipper game is followed by an ACL-tilt versus Nauset on Thursday and Dennis-Yarmouth on Friday.
