Dunn and Gallant Weave Magic Over Sandwich Blue Knights

SOUTH YARMOUTH – Junior southpaw Drew Gallant went the distance for his second win of the season (2-0), while battery-mate Mike Dunn hammered a pair of doubles to lead the Dennis-Yarmouth nine (5-3) to a 4-3 victory over the visiting Sandwich High squad (3-5).

Gallant needed just 74 pitches in seven innings of work and held the visitors scoreless until the Knights plated a pair in the fourth to make it 3-2. The lanky lefty got out of the fourth with bases loaded and that was all he needed to bear down and finish it out.

Senior catcher Dunn drove in Alex Baler in the first, then came home on a Mike Knell RBI-double and a 3-0 first frame was all Gallant needed to be staked to keep his Dolphins afloat and in command of this key Atlantic Coast League affair.

“We need to hit the ball more consistently, however, we hit the ball hard but we’re not looking at too many pitches,” first-year head Dolphin head coach J.D. Stone said.

Sandwich Senior Jake Golden settled after the first to strike out the next four batters he faced but ultimately he gave way to southpaw Will Crowther who ended up taking the hard-luck loss after affording the hosts a run in the fifth frame.

Dunn went 2-3 for the Dolphins and was the sole D-Y batter with multiple hits. Knell, Jake Gleason and Ben Chapasko were the only other Dolphins to reach safely via the basehit.

Gallant scattered seven hits, struck out three and walked just one for his second win of the season. Senior Gandin McCaffrey filled in at third base for Matt Scruggs (illness) and made a couple of key plays early in the affair that picked the D-Y team up.

“He (McCaffrey) stepped up and made two strong plays to start the game,” Stone said. “I think that gave us some confidence.”

Dennis-Yarmouth hits the road Friday (May 1) for another key Atlantic Coast League match-up when it faces the Nauset Warriors at Eldredge Park in Orleans at 6:00 pm.
