Earley Leads Falmouth Academy Laxwomen; Nicholas Nets Nine Goals for CCA

The effort helped clinch an MIAA postseason berth for the Mariner girls for the first time.

The unbeaten Mariners got on the scoreboard quickly in this affair on a goal by Addy Hayman – who ended up with an impressive four goals and two assists – but then Earley pounded three in the goal in succession to give the hosts a relatively quick 4-1 lead.

From that point forward the Academy girls would simply not relent.

Falmouth Academy received a hat trick from Christie Brake, two goals apiece from Charlotte and Eliza Van Voorhis and a solo tally from Hannah Ginsberg to round out the damage set by the prolific Mariners’ offense. Mashpee, one of the top teams on the Cape, received a hat trick from Tara Palermo and a pair of goals from Christina Ball and solo scores were turned in by Jackie Lynch, Erica Caldwell and Aradia Jacobson.

The Mariners face Nantucket this afternoon at 4:00 pm in a key Cape & Islands League affair. Falmouth Academy currently sits atop the league at 6-0. Mashpee welcomes Plymouth South today at 3:30 pm.

Cape Cod Academy – 12
St. John Paul II – 12

She simply could not be stopped.

Cape Cod Academy’s Rebekah Nicholas scored a career-high nine goals Monday afternoon to almost single-handedly keep the Seahawks in contention in a 12-12 tie with St. John Paul II, but it was both teams’ goaltenders who kept things even in the game’s waning seconds at the Sandy Pond Recreation Complex in West Yarmouth.

“We had 21 shots with many of them early and just could not find the back of the net,” St. John Paul II head coach Mike Sullivan said. “(I) have to give credit to CCA for taking advantage and sneaking back in the game.”

Truth be told, Cape Cod Academy was down at halftime, 7-4, and came storming back to score eight second half goals and tie it at 12-12. Both goaltenders — Cape Cod Academy’s Tenzin Pelzom and the Lady Lions’ Lily Almquist — were tremendous as the game came down to the wire and both teams tried to snatch victory. Almquist recorded 12 saves and Pelzom had seven for the day.

Nicholas also added an assist to her nine-goal blitzkrieg. Teammate JoJo Edmonds added a hat trick to the effort. For the Lady Lions, Mikenzie Carbone and Casey Sullivan each had four goals, Kyra McCabe added two and Olivia Bengtson and Amanda Gould each had one.  Sophomore Jessica Tierney added two assists.

St. John Paul II heads to Nantucket on Thursday, while Cape Cod Academy hosts Sturgis West tomorrow, Wednesday, at 3:30 pm.
