SOUTH YARMOUTH – Perhaps inspired by sophomore Charlotte Van Voorhis’ fiery brand of run and gun offense, the Falmouth Academy girls’ lacrosse team won its second straight yesterday at John Simpkins Field.
The Mariners defeated Sturgis West, 18-4, with Van Voorhis pouring in a game-high four goals, followed by a trio of Falmouth Academy girls who each had hat tricks: Addy Hayman, Christie Brake and Celie Mastroianni.
Falmouth Academy staged a 12-1 lead by halftime, with Hayman scoring the Mariners’ first pair of goals, followed by Brake, Van Voorhis and Jane Earley, who ultimately finished the day with two scores.
Van Voorhis scored three more before the halftime whistle blew, and freshman attacker Hannah Ginsberg would also score a pair before the dust had finally settled.
“We dominated on the draw controls and interceptions,” Falmouth Academy head coach Sarah Knowles said.
Sturgis West’s Sarah Walman got the Navigators on the scoreboard just before the end of the first half.
Mastroianni scored all three of her goals in the second half for Falmouth Academy and Sturgis West’s Chloe Bass scored three as well. Bass was the sole Navigator to score multiple times on the day, a perfect hat-trick.
The 18-4 victory gives Falmouth Academy a grand total of 37 goals in just two games. The Mariners defeated Nantucket – a usually very tough team – on Tuesday, 19-8.
Falmouth Academy goalie Kenzie Rogers had five saves in a fine effort between the pipes. Both victories this week for the Academy were Cape & Islands League wins.
“We are off to a strong start of the season,” said coach Sarah Knowles, “with a majority of our players being underclassmen.”
Falmouth Academy next takes on Sturgis East (0-2) on Monday in another Cape & Islands League affair.
