Mariners’ freshman point guard Kendall Currence maintained her breakneck offensive pace in the victory, leading all scorers with 16 points on the night, followed by Eliza Van Voorhis with 10 points. The only other player who scored in the double digits was Sturgis West’s Shannon Crawley who poured in 10 points for the home team.
Falmouth Academy is 5-1 in the Cape & Islands League and next week faces Sturgis East at home followed by a ferry ride to face a talented Nantucket team.
Sturgis West drops to 3-4 on the season and next faces Cape Cod Academy on Wednesday (Jan. 21).
Falmouth Academy used its usual run and gun, fast-moving offense to build up a 20-7 halftime lead that the host Navigators simply could not chip away at. Combine that offensive strategy with a high-pressure defensive attack, and the Navigators simply could not break through the barrier to put up more points.
“They packed it in tight with a two-three (zone),” Falmouth Academy head coach Gus Adams said. “So we could get whatever perimeter shots we wanted but we were ice cold, but we got through it.”
The Mariners’ Charlotte Van Voorhis added four points to the effort, followed by Taylor Mulhearn with five points and Jane Early with six points.
Rachael Gardner and Maggie Farley each had three points for the Navigators but West’s usual top-scorer Becca Rowe was held to just two points on the night.
