SOUTH YARMOUTH – If there’s ever a natural gas crisis on Cape Cod, National Grid need only call Dennis-Yarmouth ace Sammi Feinstein.
That’s because the hard-throwing pitcher brings nothing but pure gas versus opponents, as she proved once more Wednesday afternoon against the tough-to-beat Falmouth Clippers with a brilliant, 3-0, three-hit shutout.
Feinstein struck out 10 Clippers in the complete-game, seven-inning masterpiece, and did not allow a hit until the fifth inning when Falmouth’s Kelly Ferreira broke up what would have been the Dolphin hurler’s second no-no in as many outings. Feinstein tossed her first career no-hitter earlier in the week versus Barnstable High.
Kassie Gaudet and Rachel Weaver had the other basehits against Feinstein who also allowed no walks in her fourth straight win of the campaign. Dennis-Yarmouth is now 4-0.
The Dolphins seemed equally stymied by Falmouth’s Kathleen Desmond for two frames, but in the third inning Desmond’s effort was sullied when the hosts plated three runs, all with two outs.
After striking out the first two Dolphins she faced in the third inning, Desmond walked D-Y’s Taylor Conley, followed by a basehit from Kiley Chapasko and then D-Y head coach Mike Bonasia got the windmill going at third when his top slugger Patty Newhard uncorked a two-run double. Newhard came home on an infield error, driven in by Maggie Johnson. Meghan Coyle followed with a single to put baserunners on the corners but that’s where they stayed as Desmond settled to get the last out.
All totaled, Desmond struck out nine batters, walked two and allowed seven hits.
Dennis-Yarmouth next welcomes Martha’s Vineyard Thursday at 4:00 pm while Falmouth (2-2) welcomes the Sandwich Blue Knights for a 4:00 pm tilt.
