NORTH EASTHAM — The Nauset Regional High School football program took its game to a whole new level today.
Nauset Athletic Director and former head football coach Keith Kenyon confirmed tonight that the school has hired former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Sherman as the new Warriors’ gridiron helmsman in what can be deemed between a brilliant coup and a stunning stroke of good luck.
A Massachusetts native and West Dennis resident, Sherman, 60, was head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 2000 to 2005 where he led them to five consecutive winning seasons from 2000–04 and three divisional titles in 2002, 2003, and 2004. He was also the head football coach at Texas A&M University from 2008 to 2011 where he led the Aggies to two bowl appearances. He was a coach in the NFL for the Seattle Seahawks, Houston Texans and Miami Dolphins. His last NFL coaching stint was as offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins through January 2014. Before he started coaching in the NFL, he served as an assistant coach at five different colleges, including Texas A&M, where he coached the offensive line for seven seasons.
“I am elated,” Kenyon said from Baltimore, Maryland this evening. “It’s a great hire for our school.”
Kenyon said that Sherman, a longtime friend, contacted him about the position four months ago via telephone and that Nauset actively pursued the longtime football coach from that point forward. Sherman was officially interviewed, Kenyon said, when he indicated that indeed he was interested in the position. Kenyon stepped down from the football position – and from a program he completely reinvigorated, including ushering in the school’s new multisport turf field and stadium upgrades – to accept an assistant principal’s position in the school in addition to serving as athletic director.
“We only interviewed Mike when he became a candidate for the position,” Kenyon said.
Nauset boys’ basketball coach John McCarthy said he almost could not believe it when he heard the news.
“I’m still trying to process it,” McCarthy said.
Sherman was born in Norwood and spent his formative years in Hyde Park where he was raised by his parents, Claire and Frank Sherman. Later, in his teens, Sherman resided in Northborough where he attended and played football for Algonquin Regional High School, good enough to earn a football scholarship to Central Connecticut State University. He played defensive end and offensive tackle at CCSU, where he majored in English. Sherman was an English teacher and assistant football coach at Stamford High School in Connecticut in 1978 and at Worcester Academy in Massachusetts from 1979–80.
