NANTUCKET – The game of baseball – at any level – can be as fickle as the Cape Cod weather.
Thus was the difficult discovery made by the traveling Sturgis East Storm (3-2) as it watched its fielders commit 16 errors in combination with 12 walks afforded by its usually efficient

pitching staff en route to a 15-2 rout at the hands of the host Nantucket Whalers Saturday afternoon.
“We only gave up six hits,” Sturgis East head coach John Havey said. “It wasn’t pretty.”
Sturgis East starting pitcher Cooper Gavin went four innings and struck out five batters, but allowed six runs (two earned) on three hits and seven walks compounded by six fielding errors. Storm reliever Jared Joy went two innings and struck out three batters but nine runs came across – none of them earned – as the defense behind him fell apart with 10 errors.
Gavin went 1-2 at the plate with an RBI-single in the third inning and scored a run, while freshman Andrew Williams went 2-3 for the Storm. Joey Colesano and Mark Agostinelli had the sole other hits for the visitors.
Nantucket senior Riley Fusaro went the distance and struck out 14 batters en route to the complete-game win.
The Storm hopes to get back on track next Saturday (April 25) against the Mashpee Falcons at 1:00 pm on the road.
Nantucket (2-2) heads to the mainland on Tuesday (April 21) for a noon game against the host Monomoy Sharks at Whitehouse Field in Harwich.
