Gallant Rakes and Spins Three-Hit Masterpiece over Falmouth Clippers; Blue Knights Beat Marshfield

SOUTH YARMOUTH – Dennis-Yarmouth junior Drew Gallant brought his A-game Friday afternoon to Merrill “Red” Wilson Field, as the southpaw crafted a 7-0, three-hitter over the visiting Falmouth High Clippers.

To compound Gallant’s effect over the visitors, the hard-hitting lefty raked a pair of singles and a two-run double for a 3-3 day at the plate.

On the hill, Gallant retired the side in succession in each of the first four innings as well as the sixth frame and allowed a pair of baserunners in both the fifth and seventh innings. He struck out four and walked none en route to his third win of the season for the 7-5 Dolphins. Falmouth fell to 4-10 with the loss and will likely have to win out the rest of its 2015 schedule to qualify for the postseason.

The host Dolphins plated four runs in the first off of starter Mike Couhig, also a lefty, and that would ultimately prove to be all Gallant needed to go the distance. Gallant used just 77 pitches in the complete-game gem.

“Drew Gallant worked hard today and he threw strikes,” Dennis-Yarmouth head coach J.D. Stone said. “And he hit the ball. Everyone put the bat on the ball today and we put the ball in play. It was a good all-around game.”

Max Sumner (1-4, run) led off the bottom of the first inning with a single, followed by a Mike Dunn RBI-double to make it 1-0. First baseman Trevor Allen was hit with a pitch, Mike Knell walked and then Jake Gleason ripped into a Couhig offering for a pair of RBI and a 3-0 lead. Gallant helped his own cause with an RBI-single and when the dust settled Dennis-Yarmouth enjoyed an early, 4-0 lead.

The hosts tacked on another pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth when Allen singled with one out and then Knell walked again to put two men on and Gallant spanked a two-run double-bagger for a 6-0 advantage. Matt Scruggs walked and scored in the sixth to solidify the 7-0 victory.

D-Y centerfielder Drew Cochran added a double in the fourth inning.

The Dolphins hope to keep it rolling Monday (May 11) when they take the ferry to Oak Bluffs to face Martha’s Vineyard in a non-league contest, while the Falmouth Clippers hope to turn it around next Wednesday under the lights at Elmer “Guv” Fuller Field at 6:00 pm when the Sandwich Blue Knights come to town for another Atlantic Coast League battle.

Sandwich – 3
Marshfield – 1

The Sandwich High baseball team rode the live arm of Riley Sorenson Friday afternoon at home as the Blue Knights avenged an earlier season loss to the Marshfield Rams by defeating them, 3-1.

“It was a good team win,” said head coach Brian Tomasini.

Sorenson went the distance and struck out six while allowing only one earned run on five hits.

Blue Knights’ rightfielder Matt Dahl went 2-3 and scored two runs while also driving in the go ahead run in the top of the seventh inning.

Tied 1-1 after the first inning, both teams battled all the way to the seventh frame, when the Blue Knights scored two runs and then Sorenson slammed the door shut on the hosts in the bottom half of the seventh to end it.

Sandwich drew a pair of walks to lead off the seventh frame and then Dahl singled in J.J. Ferguson to make it 2-1. Sorenson then gave himself an insurance run by driving in Mike Manning who had walked and advanced on Dahl’s RBI-rip.

Sandwich next faces Falmouth on Wednesday (May 13) at 6:00 pm at Fuller Field.
