But in the fifth inning, Barnstable rightfielder Micah Gregory had different ideas and launched his first home run of the season over the 20-foot high wall in left at Strong Field – a three-run shot that gave Post 206 a 5-3 lead it would maintain through the end of the game for the win.

Junior righty Eric Holzman (1-0) – heading to the Taft School in the fall – turned in a superlative performance on the mound as he went 6 2/3 innings, struck out four and allowed two earned runs on three walks and four hits. With the tying runs on base in the bottom of the seventh and two outs, Clark University’s Conor Walsh came in and shut the door for the save.

Clutch hits for Barnstable Post 206 came from Jake Gleason (1-3, RBI), Andrew Williams (1-3) and Danny Crossen (1-3). Shortstop Mike Knell (2 walks) played superlative defense as did Williams.

Bray Stellar on Hill as Sandwich Post 188 Blanks Rockland Post 147

Sandwich Post 188’s John Bray went the distance Thursday night and struck out eight batters en route to a 4-0 complete-game shutout over Rockland Post 147.

Bray walked just one and allowed just two hits in his superlative mound effort.

“We were short guys tonight,” Post 188 head coach K.J. Kozens said. “But we pitched well and played defense and pushed a few (runs) across.”

Post 188 is now 7-1 on the season and leads District 10’s East Division in first place.
