The Warriors need just one more win to clinch a postseason tournament berth while the 5-10 Clippers would need to win at least five more games to make the cut.
Nauset heads to a scrappy Upper Cape Tech team on Monday at 6:30 pm. Falmouth welcomes Barnstable High tomorrow at 5:00 pm. The Clippers staged a major upset last time the two teams met, 38-37.
Ethan “Big Red” Ladue led the well-balanced Nauset attack with 13 points, while three of his teammates banged in 11 points apiece. Nick Meehan, Chris Mazulis and Eric Poyant each had 11 for the night.
Falmouth’s Eric Demers led all scorers with 17 points and netted the Clippers’ only three-pointer, while teammate Jesse Borgesse added 12 points, including eight points in a hard-played fourth quarter. All totaled, Falmouth went 21-24 for the night from the free throw line. The Clippers’ free throws accounted for 41.2% of their entire offensive output. Nauset went 11-16 from the line.
Falmouth came out strong in this Lower Cape affair, and established a 15-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Nauset came roaring back in the second frame. Seven different Nauset players scored in the second frame, three of whom hammered down three’s: Poyant, Meehan and Mazulis. When the dust settled at halftime, the hosts had turned the table and led the visiting Clippers, 34-28.
Nauset’s confidence continued in the third quarter as again the Warriors outscored their guests, 15-8, and built a 49-36 advantage.
The Warriors used the arc in the final frame, nailing five three-pointers en route to the 70-51 finale.
