Lady Lions, Barnstable Red Raider Tennis Teams Roll On

OSTERVILLE — The St. John Paul II girls’ tennis team avenged an early-season loss and picked up a key Cape & Islands League victory Tuesday afternoon, defeating the always-tough and well-coached Cape Cod Academy girls in a fierce, 3-2, net battle Tuesday afternoon.

The key win for the Lady Lions placed them at 3-4 on the season while the host Seahawks fell to 2-3.

St. John Paul II number one singles player and senior co-captain Haylee Whiteley led the way for the Lady Lions with a hard-fought, 7-5, 1-2 (CCA def) victory over Seahawks’ ace Nelle Thornton.

Cape Cod Academy’s Noelle Benoit evened the score when she defeated Lady Lions’ junior co-captain Emily Canzano in a gritty tête-à-tête. Benoit defeated Canzano, 6-4, 6-3.

St. John Paul II’s sophomore stalwart Allison Santos put the Lady Lions back on top when she defeated Marina Gordella, 6-2, 6-3 at the number three singles slot.

“Allison played a beautiful match at third singles,” said first-year head coach Katie Dombrowski. “She… played with tenacity and prowess.”

Then it all came down to doubles play and it was the number two St. John Paul II doubles pairing that brought home the victory. Sophomore Julia Grady & junior Grace Sohoel-Goldberg took down Cape Cod Academy’s Gracyn Roundtree and Claire Punta, 6-2, 6-3, after the Academy girls captured the number one doubles match-up.

Seahawks’ duo Olivia Doe and Claire Carvounis defeated Jacqueline Germani and Rachel McLellan, 6-2, 6-3, but the Lady Lions prevailed nevertheless.

St. John Paul II returns to action on Thursday at Bishop Stang.

Barnstable Red Raider Boys Remain Undefeated in Clutch Win Over Dartmouth Indians on the Road

Red Raider senior co-captain Sonny Bisazza climbed back in the saddle Tuesday after being out of commission for over a week and picked up right where he left off.

The Barnstable number one singles player paced the Red & White net men with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Dartmouth’s Chris Ouellette en route to a 5-0 victory and a still unblemished team record of 8-0.

Tyler Shibles made things relatively clear that the Red Raiders may just be the state’s team to beat this spring as he blanked the Indians’ Max Lindblom at number two singles, 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Max Francis continued his torrid, focused pace at the number three singles spot — after a stellar day Monday at number one singles — defeating Connor Alves, 6-0, 6-0.

Senior co-captain Donnie Brodd and his cohort Cooper Blaze performed equally as well at number one doubles, defeating Dartmouth’s Nick Starrett and Tanner Waltz, 6-1, 6-1, followed by Gabe Rourke and Daniel Dettinger-Klemm at number two doubles over Chase Correia and Patrick Thornton, 6-0, 6-1.

Red Raider Girls’ Tennis Team Continues to Shine

Lauren Persson, Katie Tynan and Caroline Young each notched victories at number one, two and three singles Tuesday, and paced the Red Raiders to a 5-0 victory over the visiting Dartmouth Indians. Barnstable is now 6-1 on the season.

Persson defeated Hallie Cordoza, 6-1, 6-0, followed by Tynan’s 6-1, 6-1, win over Stephanie Bullard. Young had a tougher pairing versus Darmtouth’s Kelly McManus, but the Red Raider number three singles player prevailed, 7-5, 6-4.

Taya Berler and Michaela Cornwall continued their unbeaten pace this spring, with a clutch victory over Lucy Schwartz and Caroline Bagnin, 6-2, 6-2, at number one doubles and Emma Doe and Olivia Berler wrapped things up with a win after dropping the first set to Emma Caneira and Karina Almeida. Caneira and Almeida won the first set, 6-0, but Doe and Berler came back to win 6-1, 6-0 to give Barnstable the solid Old Colony League victory.
