Lions’ Lacrosse Teams Sweep Pair, BC High Devours Barnstable

YARMOUTH – The St. John Paul II Lady Lions lacrosse team (5-8-1) notched an uplifting, 18-9 victory Saturday morning against visiting Greater New Bedford Voke Tech at the Sandy Pond Recreation Complex.

Scoring for the hosts was spread out over seven players with Mikenzie Carbone leading the pack with six goals and Olivia Bengston just behind with four.

“It was a good win for the Lions today,” St. John Paul II girls’ lacrosse head coach Mike Sullivan said. “We were able to control the possessions, ground balls and clock throughout the game.”

Lady Lions’ Kyra McCabe added a pair of markers as did sophomore Jessica Tierney and Grace Noonan. Brianna Wooten and Kendall Geary each added one goal.

Noonan was a standout on defense for the hosts, with a both of her scores being “end-to-end goals,” and Amanda Gould caused several turnovers. Attacker Geary and Bengston were critical components of the Lions’ midfield strategy as they both maintained superior draw control.

“Mikenze Carbone had a very strong game at center and finishing her scoring drives,” Coach Sullivan added.

The Lions welcome the very tough Falmouth Academy squad on Monday (May 18) at the Sandy Pond Recreation Complex in Yarmouth.

Greater New Bedford Voke – 6

Lions’ midfielder Timmy Jordan found the back of the net five times Saturday afternoon to lead St. John Paul II to a 15-5 boys’ lacrosse victory on the road against Greater New Bedford Voke Tech. Jordan’s five-goal tally gave him 50 thus far for the season.

St. John Paul II is now 9-4 and qualified for a postseason south sectional berth with the victory.

Attackers Matt O’Connor, Gil Bach and Devan Harding each added a pair of markers to the ultimate tally, while Lions’ teammates Alan Fox, Pat Lawson and Nick Anketell tacked on solo goals. Bach added three assists to his two-goal effort.

Griffin Guerin was superlative in net for the Lions, as he recorded 19 saves on the day.

Greater New Bedford Voke Tech’s Corey Barrows scored four goals in the effort and teammate Tom Oliveira netted two. Alex Dixon and Mat Aguiar each added assists for the hosts.

The Lions head to Dennis-Yarmouth next Friday night (May 22) for a 6:00 pm match-up that should prove to be intense as both teams prepare to head into the postseason.

Boston College High School – 20
Barnstable – 4

The Barnstable High School boys’ lacrosse team (6-12) dropped a 20-4 match-up to the host BC High Eagles Saturday afternoon, and in so doing surpassed the lowest Red Raider team winning percentage in a decade (6-11/2005).

Sam Friedman netted four goals and added a pair of assists, as did teammate A.J. Kucinski. Senior attacker Ryan Dowd netted five goals and added two assists to lead all Eagles’ scorers on the day. Junior Patrick Greene and Jack Berg each added two goals in the win.

Barnstable’s Brener DeSouza, senior co-captain Mike McDonough, junior Jack Pipatti and junior Reece Hoppensteadt each scored single goals for the visiting Red & White.

Barnstable wraps up its regular season on Wednesday (May 20) on the road at Scituate.
