Magical Mariners’ Lacrosse Season Comes to an End

COHASSET – It’s been said that every good thing must come to an end.

And thus that was the case Wednesday afternoon at Cohasset High School where the magical spring and previously unbeaten record of the 2015 Falmouth Academy girls’ lacrosse team (15-1) came to an end with a 19-7 loss to the host Skippers in the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional girls’ lacrosse quarterfinals.

“Despite the score, it was a good game,” said head coach Sarah Knowles. “We were only four (goals) behind after the first half and their coach was nervous. But they did have more depth and players on their roster and that seemed to hurt us a bit.”

Freshman top scorer Jane Earley and fellow attack-mate Addy Hayman both notched a pair of goals for the Mariners while Christie Brake and the Van Voorhis sisters – Eliza and Charlotte – each had one. Hayman added an assist but it was simply not enough as Cohasset ran away with it in the second half.

The loss eliminated the Mariners from the postseason and culminated what had been – until today – an unblemished run with 15 straight victories and a Cape & Islands League title to boot.

Mariners’ goalie Kenzie Rogers turned in a superlative effort with 12 saves, but it was Cohasset’s ability to dominate draw controls that clearly gave the hosts the upper hand in this postseason affair.

Cohasset’s Corey Golden and Elle Hansen each scored five goals and added two assists apiece to pace the relentless Skippers’ attack. Teammate Ally Leahy tacked on four markers and two assists to add to the damage. Olivia Coveney added two goals to round things out as Cohasset advances to the Division 2 South Sectional semifinals on Monday (June 8) versus the winner of Hanover and Fairhaven.

Earley’s two goals gave her 70 for the season.
