VIDEO: Mashpee Nine Crowned South Shore League (Small) Champions

MASHPEE – The postgame pigpile in the middle of the infield diamond said it all.

Comprised chiefly of underclassmen, the Mashpee High School baseball team (15-7) defeated Hull Friday evening, 5-3, and with the victory captured the South Shore League (Small)

championship crown. The Falcons finished 9-4 in league play.

Six out of eight of the everyday varsity starters for the Falcons are either a freshman or sophomore and of its seven-man pitching staff, five are underclassmen.

One such underclassman was sophomore Patrick Madden who pitched his Falcon teammates to victory. Only an early balk that allowed Hull to tie it at 1-1 and a pair of late-inning Pirate runs marked an otherwise excellent pitching performance by the young hurler.

Sophomore Nick Carpenter’s first-inning basehit extended his hitting streak to all 22 of the Falcons’ games this spring, but it was Alex Morry who drove Carpenter in to make it 2-1 and Madden would take that lead to the sixth before Hull plated a harmless pair.

Falcon freshman Zack Landry belted a two-run double that made it 5-1, Mashpee.
