Barnstable sophomore attacker Jonathan Ramos added to the damage with a pair of goals and Red Raiders with single goals on the day included Will Kennedy, Reece Hoppensteadt, Jack Pipatti, Stephen Megnia, Spencer Jones and Evan Mulone.

“We basically dominated at the face-off,” head coach Chris Whidden said. “Reece (Hoppensteadt) won nine of 14 faceoffs and with that we were able to control things.”

The Red Raiders hit the road Monday (April 6) to face rival Bridgewater-Raynham.

Tate Blasts Home Run, Lady Lions Roll Over Mashpee Falcons

The St. John Paul II girls’ softball team (1-0) opened the 2015 season Wednesday at home versus the Mashpee Falcons (0-1) and staged a solid 10-4 victory.

Hadley Tate belted a three-run home run in the first inning to set the tone for the Blue & Gold, and the Lions went up 4-0 in the first frame. Tate went 3-3 on the day and Lions’ hurler Jackie Smith not only got the win but also added three hits to the hitting parade. The Lions tacked on another three runs in the bottom of the third inning to make it 7-0, before Mashpee plated one run in the fifth. The Falcons picked up three more in the sixth inning to make it a 7-4 game, but three more runs by the Lions in the bottom of the sixth iced the victory.

Smith went the distance, struck out six batters, walked six and hit a pair of batsmen while scattering eight hits. Mashpee junior hurler Sam Fraser took the loss for the Falcons. She struck out five batters.

The Falcons were no slouches at the plate, however, banging out nine hits in all. Jessica Schmelzer went 2-4, Jordyn Carpenter went 3-4 and Jaylynn Merkman went 2-2 with a pair of walks to pace the Falcon offense.
