Middleboro No Match for Falmouth Academy Mariners

FALMOUTH — On the heels of a stellar victory against St. John Paul II last night, the Falmouth Academy basketball girls did it again.

Having defeated a tough Middleboro team on the road by just 10 points just over a week ago, the Mariners welcomed the Sachems earlier this evening for a rematch and thoroughly dispatched them, 53-25.

Falmouth Academy is now 14-2 on the season heading into the final week to 10 days of regular season play.

Taylor Mulhearn turned in a tremendous performance for the host Mariners, pouring in 17 points and pulling down nine rebounds. She also went 5-8 from the free throw line.

Christie Brake also turned in a “monster game,” as Falmouth Academy head coach Gus Adams characterized it, pulling down a phenomenal 16 rebounds to go along with four points on the night.

Freshman phenom Kendall Currence turned in yet another rock-solid offensive output, dumping in 18 points spread out evenly over four quarters.

“Middleboro is a scrappy team,” Coach Adams said. “But we really just dominated the boards tonight.”

Falmouth Academy took an early, 13-8 lead in the first quarter, built upon that lead by halftime to 29-12 and by the end of the third quarter it was 40-21.

The Mariners have won eight straight and over the course of that eight-game stretch have allowed an average of just 27 points per game. For the season? Falmouth Academy’s tempestuous, no-holds barred defense has allowed just 33 points per game.

“We only beat them by 10 last time,” Adams said. ” The kids are just hyped up on defense. They’re in the zone.”

Falmouth Academy star Eliza Van Voorhis added just seven points on the night but that did little to worry her coach.

“She’s a gamer,” Adams said. “A three-sport star. She’s cerebral and she sees things on the court sometimes the coach can’t see and she is not hesitant to pick the right moments to tell me. You just don’t get that that often.”

The Mariners are currently tied with St. John Paul II in Cape & Islands League play and will likely remain that way through the end of the regular season. Falmouth Academy heads to Cape Tech for a make-up game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m then faces Mashpee on Tuesday and Sturgis West later in the week.
