Nantucket Softballers Tred Unlightly on Host Red Raiders

HYANNIS – While the Barnstable High softball team (0-3) may still be looking for an answer, the visiting Nantucket Whalers were not amenable to helping that answer come to light in a 15-1 complete game road win Saturday afternoon.

The Whalers’ righty Samantha Stewart struck out seven batters and went the distance for her second win of the season as Nantucket (2-2) got all the runs it would need in the third inning when it plated three.

The Whalers added four more in the fourth inning, one in the fifth two in the sixth and five more in the seventh on a total of 19 hits. Farell Duce went 3-5 from the leadoff spot, Isabella Kyburg went 4-6 and Brooke Campbell went 4-4 to pace the Whalers’ hitting attack.

Still, Barnstale High’s Kristen Stephani held the Whaler bats scoreless through the first two innings in the hard-luck loss.

Barnstable’s Ashlie Curtiss went 2-3, Cassidy Lariviere went 2-3 and Mia Crawley had a hit while Jamie Corey drove in the Red Raiders’ sole run of the day.

“Curtiss stood out at shortstop, defensively,” said Barnstable first-year head coach Martha Deusser. “Kristen Stephani battled and threw strong. They are coming around.”
