EAST SANDWICH – There’s a saying in baseball that a team can never have enough lefties.
Thus, for the second straight game, the Nauset Regional High baseball team sent a southpaw to the hill and Saturday afternoon Paul Prue delivered in what could only be deemed a portrait of efficiency as the Warriors downed the host Sandwich Blue Knights, 5-1. It was the second Atlantic Coast League contest this week for Nauset (1-1) and it was the first for Sandwich as the Blue Knights fell to 1-1.

Nauset Warrior southpaw Paul Prue notched his first win of the season Saturday afternoon at Sandwich High in a 5-1 win. He went the distance.

Prue went seven innings, struck out two batters and allowed just one earned run on nine hits and one walk for his first win of the 2015 campaign.
His opponent, Riley Sorenson, went 3 2/3 innings and fanned seven batters while giving up just four hits. He also walked four and it was those four walks, combined with three hits that afforded visiting Nauset a pair of runs in the third and three runs in the fourth inning. Jack DeCoste went 3 2/3 innings of relief, coming in out of right field for Sorenson in Nauset’s three-run 4th inning. He struck out six, walked none and allowed no hits.
“It was our second game and it was our second time out on a baseball field,” said Sandwich first-year head coach Brian Tomasini. “Between the snow and the cold and the rain, I think these guys have done a really nice job, actually, with how well they’ve adapted with not seeing a baseball field… I’m not worried about this at all.”
Nauset got on the scoreboard first when Willy Boyd led off the top of the third inning with a one-out walk and then Prue followed with a free pass to put runners on first and second. A passed ball advanced both into scoring position and then Sam Majewski (1-3, 2 RBI) picked up his first of two RBI on the day with a sac fly to center field that made it 1-0. Trevor Ridley followed with a two-out, RBI-double that made it 2-0 before Sorenson could settle down to get out of the inning.
Sorenson struck out the first two batters he faced in the fourth inning, but then the Warriors turned things up with a hit and a walk and Prue drove in a run on an error by the Sandwich second baseman. Majewski followed with a an RBI-baseknock and when the dust settled the visitors held a 5-0 lead.

Nauset’s Sam Majewski was key at the plate for the Warriors in their 5-1 win Saturday versus Sandwich.

Sandwich staged its own two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth inning on hits from Brady Doherty, Sorenson and Dillon Kay, with Kay driving in the Blue Knights’ sole run of the ball game.
“Prue was pretty efficient, he threw about 80-something pitches,” Nauset head coach Lou Elia said.
Sandwich got a 2-3 day at the plate from Sorenson and Pat Tierney and Kay was 1-3 with one RBI. Noah Grevelis had a pair of key hits for the Warriors.
Nauset is 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic Coast League with another league battle on tap for Tuesday when they face Marshfield at home in North Eastham.
