Nearing 1,000: Fitzgerald Pours in 28 Points to Pace Sturgis East Storm Over Cape Tech

HARWICH – It’s not uncommon for any high school basketball team to have at least one standout player, and last night on the road Sturgis East’s Meaghan Fitzgerald proved once more she is the cog that turns The Storm’s collective wheel.

Fitzgerald inched within immediate striking distance of reaching the 1,000-career points milestone last night by pouring in a game-high 28 points and leading Sturgis East to a decisive, 52-33 win. Sturgis East is now 5-7 on the season while Cape Tech falls to 2-10.

Fitzgerald’s 28 points gives her 966 career points, just 34 shy of the mark.

The Storm jumped out to a quick, 17-6, first-quarter lead and never looked back as Fitzgerald nailed a downtown three-pointer at the buzzer.

By halftime, Sturgis East’s lead expanded to a 28-11 margin and by the end of the third frame the score was 39-20.

“Yes, (it was) a good win,” said Sturgis East interim head coach Nick Conti. “The girls had a great game.”

Storm point guard Caroline Sullivan netted 10 points to finish as the sole other Sturgis East player to finish in double-digits.

Cape Tech’s Kelci Brouwer was the high scorer for the Crusaders. She finished with eight points and teammate Mikaela Eldredge finished with six points.

Cape Tech did match Sturgis East point-for-point in a 13-13 fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late to bridge the deficit.

Cape Tech’s seniors were honored last night, including Acaysia Rose, co-captains Eldredge and Kiah Gomes, Britney Benoit and
