Needham Edges Barnstable Red Raiders in 26-hit Softball Tilt

HYANNIS – The visiting Needham High girls’ softball team hammered out 14 hits Saturday afternoon against the Barnstable Red Raiders, but in the process barely eked out an 11-10 win as the hosts showed equal prowess with the bats.

Barnstable (4-9) pounded out 12 hits of their own and initially held forth a 3-0 lead after the first inning, a lead which grew to 6-2 after two frames.

But in the fifth inning, Needham came back and came back heavy, plating four runs to tie it at 6-6. Regardless, Barnstable was determined to make this one a victory and came firing back in the bottom half of the frame with four runs and headed to the sixth with a 10-6 lead.

Needham was equally determined to make the bus ride home a happy one, however, and in the top of the sixth inning banged out four hits en route to a five-run rally that would prove to be the final score of 11-10.

Barnstable pitcher Rachel Creswell went the distance and took the loss, but she needed just 79 pitches in the effort and walked none while allowing 14 hits.

Red Raider catcher Jaime Corey led the hit parade with a 3-4 day at the plate including a triple and four RBI, while shortstop Ashlie Curtiss went 3-5 with three RBI from the leadoff spot.

Shyanne Pires, Barnstable’s centerfielder, went 2-4 with two RBI and Danielle Curtin went 2-5 and scored a pair of runs.

The Red Raiders will be back at it on Monday (May 11) for another non-league contest against the Nauset Warriors at home.
