Oriola Nearly Perfect in One-Hitter over Cape Cod Academy

OSTERVILLE – St. John Paul II ace Joe Oriola tossed a complete-game, one-hit shutout Thursday over the host Cape Cod Academy Seahawks in a brilliant display of command and poise as the Lions went on to a 12-0 victory.

The hard-throwing righty struck out 14, walked none and allowed just one hit – a fourth-inning double to Cape Cod Academy senior catcher Jack Massari – and he retired the side in five of his seven masterful frames.

St. John Paul II is now 9-0 on the season and Cape Cod Academy is 2-5.

The host Seahawks had two other baserunners in the bottom of the first inning, with the first one reaching safely on a strikeout in the dirt, then the second one on a fielder’s choice. Massari was stranded at second base in the fourth after belting an opposite-field double.

The Lions plated four runs in the first inning on hits from Bobby Higgins, Blake Waters, Eric Delrosso and Jonny Warden and that was all the guests would need as Oriola proved virtually unhittable throughout the affair.

Matt Santos led the way for the Lions at the plate with a 3-4 day, while Cole Campbell and Warden each had a pair of safeties.

Dan Crossen took the hard-luck loss for the Seahawks and Jack Siegel and Louis DeVesto split relief duties the rest of the way.

Crossen flashed some exceptional leather at shortstop for the Academy nine, and Massari nailed the Lions’ top base-stealer – Warden – with an exceptional throw from behind the dish in the third frame.

The Seahawks hope to get back on track on Tuesday (May 12) when Sturgis West visits for another Cape & Islands League tilt on the Osterville school campus.

St. John Paul II will go for its 10th straight win this season also on Tuesday (May 12) when it welcomes the Nantucket Whalers at McKeon Park at 3:30 pm.
