Red Raider Gymnasts Remain on Top, Defeat Falmouth/Mashpee

YARMOUTH PORT — History, it seems, has a way of repeating itself.

On the night of Red Raider twin sister gymnasts Kayla and Hayley Myrbeck’s birthday, defending state champion Barnstable came within one point of matching the all-time state meet record last night in its 147.10-140 victory over rival Falmouth/Mashpee at home. Barnstable is now 8-0 on the season.

Not two weeks ago, the Red Raiders did exactly the same thing, scoring a 147.15 in a tri-meet with Carver and Marshfield. In that meet, sophomore Lauren Hansen tied the all-time school record of 9.8 on vault, previously set by 2008 captain Brittan Morris.

Last night, one half of the Red Raider birthday girls – Hayley Myrbeck – tied that 9.8 vault record.

“This is a very strong team,” head coach Duncan Chase said. “We will see how far that takes us.”

The Myrbeck twins, who were celebrating their 17th birthdays together, competed and won the All-Around in succession: Hayley in first place at 36.55 and Kayla in second place at 35.9. Falmouth/Mashpee’s Taylor Diamond came in third place at 35.7 and her teammate Sidney Pinsonneault came in fourth place at 35.45.

Myrbeck’s record-tying vault was followed by her sister Kayla’s second place vault of 9.55. Falmouth/Mashpee’s Michael Canetelli tied for third place with Barnstable’s Lauren Hansen, each with a 9.45.

On the uneven bars, it was Hansen who turned in a first place finish with her 9.5 score, followed by fellow Red Raider Alexa Wilson who had a 9.4. Falmouth/Mashpee’s Canetelli took another third place, coming in behind both girls at 9.2. Hayley Myrbeck took fourth place with an even 9.00.

On the balance beam, the diminutive Tali Twomey scored a fabulous 9.5 as she put a dash of flair on her balancing act, followed by Falmouth/Mashpee’s Pinsonneault who came in second at 8.9 and Kayla Myrbeck in third place at 8.8. Barnstable senior captain Jillian Fraser took fourth place with an 8.7 mark.

In the floor routine, Kayla Myrbeck shined once more, nailing a brilliantly executed 9.55, followed right behind by the spirited Twomey who notched an equally top-notch 9.5. Lauren Hansen was no slouch, either, scoring a 9.4 for third place. Falmouth/Mashpee’s Taylor Dimond came in fourth place with a respectable 9.1 score.
