Red Raider Gymnasts on Verge of Greatness: Again

Yarmouth Port — Meet after meet this season, the Barnstable High School gymnasts have hovered around or come within one point of setting a new state record.

It would be ironic except for the fact that it was Barnstable that set the state dual meet record for highest team score back on January 31, 2008 at 148.25.

Friday night was no exception to the Red Raiders being on their A-game as Barnstable defeated Medfield/Ashland.Dover-Sherborn, 147.65 to 137.20.

“So close to the state record,” assistant coach Jillian Pacheco said. “We are going to get it this season I feel it.”

Now at 10-0, if the Red Raiders have anything in their favor other than pure talent from their number ones, it’s having multiple choices of performers in each event.

“We have a lot of depth so we are very lucky to sub in girls with talent,” Pacheco said.

Barnstable took the top two slots in the all-around with the stellar sophomore Lauren Hansen on top at 36.7 and junior Kayla Myrbeck close behind in second place with a score of 36.2.

In the vault, it was Kayla Myrbeck in first place with a nice 9.6, followed by her twin sister Hayley Myrbeck at, well, an identical 9.6 score. Hansen came in second place with a 9.4 and Abigail Chetwynd came in third place with a respectable 9.2.

On the uneven bars it was Hansen on top with a 9.6, followed by the diminutive but gifted Tali Twomey at 9.45. Alexa Wilson tied Twomey with a 9.45 and Kayla Myrpbeck rounded up the event sweep in third place at 8.8.

On the balance beam, perhaps Barnstable’s only weakness, the Red Raiders took first and second place nevertheless with Kayla Myrbeck at 9.3 and Chetwynd at 9.2. Medfield’s Megan Keith came in third place with an 8.5 score.

In the floor routine, Twomey nailed it with a jazzy 9.55, followed by Hansen with a 9.4. Medfield’s Chloe Covell tied Hansen in the event with an equal 9.4 score. The guests picked up another point tally from third place finisher Allison Arthur who turned in a 9.3.

Barnstable’s next meet is today (Saturday, Jan. 24) on the road against Case and Falmouth/Mashpee in Somerset at 5:00 pm.
