SHREWSBURY – Just 48 hours earlier, Barnstable High School boys’ tennis teammates Donnie Brodd, Cooper Blaze and Tyler Shibles were busy celebrating the school’s first-ever MIAA Division 1 state championship title.

And Saturday, it was Brodd and Blaze who were busy celebrating once again after capturing the individual MIAA Division 1 State Doubles Championship with a resounding win over Westboro’s top doubles pair and then Acton-Boxborough’s fiercely talented tandem.
It marked a storybook season for the Red Raider net men as the team set a new school tennis record with a 22-1 season and the team state championship in addition to Saturday’s doubles’ title.
Shibles, who was crowned the Division 1 South Sectional individual singles champion, however, fell just short.
Westboro’s number one singles star and the MIAA Division 1 Central Sectional Champion, defeated Shibles in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, in the state semifinals round.
In the state doubles’ semifinals, Blaze and Brodd defeated Westboro’s Anuraag Gopaluni and Bryan Zheng, 6-2, 6-4, in a complete reversal of their match earlier this week in the state team finals. Gopaluni and Zheng defeated Brodd and Blaze 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, but not today.
After defeating Westboro’s talented tandem, the two Barnstable “B’s” advanced to the state championship match against Acton-Boxborough’s Curtis Guba, a sophomore and Jeff Zhao, a junior.
Brodd and Blaze defeated the Colonials’ duo in an exciting three-set match.
