Red Raiders Remain Perfect: Capture OCL Championship Meet

BRIDGEWATER — Having already been crowned this season the Old Colony League champions for the first time in 15 years, the still undefeated Barnstable High boys’ track and field team stuck another feather in its cap last night with wins over Bridgewater-Raynham and Dartmouth at the Old Colony League Championship Meet at Bridgewater State University.

Now 7-0, the Red Raiders outscored Bridgewater-Raynham 76-65 and Dartmouth, 76-26, for the pair of wins and outright Old Colony League bragging rights. It was the first time in five years Bridgewater-Raynham has not won the title.

“The team really stepped up today across the board,” said Barnstable head coach and former Red Raider track captain Mike Merrill. “There were many personal bests…I am very proud of how the team performed today but equally proud of how they supported not only each other but their opponents.”

Barnstable captain Nick Johnson led the way for the Red & White with a first place finish in the discus with a throw of 136’0″ and he followed that up with a win in the shotput with a throw of 42’11.25″.

“Nick Johnson continues to be a cornerstone of the team,” Coach Merrill said.

Red Raider junior Nathan Fitzgerald threw for a personal best in the discus with a throw of 109’8″ and placed 4th overall while sophomore Zach Morgan secured a 4th place finish in the shotput with a throw of 37’0″. Barnstable junior Tanner Banks threw for a season’s best and had the win in the javelin with a throw of 143’6″ and junior Nathan Ryan was second in the javelin with a throw of 137’1″.

Barnstable once again revealed its dominance this season in the long jump, as the Red Raiders took three of the top four spots. Senior Willie Brown came in first place with a 19’4.5″ output, sophomore Chris Fawcett was second with 19’0 and senior Malique Dickerson-Pells was third with 18’8″. In the triple jump, Malique Dickerson-Pells secured a first place finish with a jump of 38’9″ and senior Jedidiah Cadet was 4th in the triple jump with 37’3.5″.

Barnstable senior Kyle Anderson won some crucial points for the Raiders by placing third in both the 110m hurdles (20.20) and 400m hurdles (68.4) while Brown shined forth again with a win in the 100 meter dash in a time of 11.37 seconds.

Junior Casey Connor had a big night placing third in the one mile race with a personal best of 4:53. It was the first time the stellar up-and-coming athlete broke the 5:00-minute mile barrier in his still young career. Remarkably, Connor returned later in the meet to post a first-place finish in the two-mile race with a time of 10:37, also a personal best. Connor’s performance in the one-mile race was only overshadowed by fellow junior Ray Todoroff who took home the first place medal with a time of 4:46.

Sophomore Cam Faszewski was fourth in the 2-mile with a personal best of 11:01 and senior Chris Lovett ran strong at the front for the win in the 800m race with a time of 2:06.19. Also running well and setting personal bests in the mile were runners Derek Silliman (5:11), Jack Horton III (5:18), Joseph Lennon-Phillips (5:21) and Brian Judge (5:38). Junior Ryan Chevalier was third in the 200 meters with a time of 24.62. Sophomore Lucas Lanzo was second in the 400 meters with a personal best of 54.83. Both Ryan and Lucas teamed up with Chris Lovett and Sophomore Devon Harris to come away with a big win in the 4×400 relay in a time of 3:42.94.
