HYANNIS — Following an extensive months-long search, St. John Paul II High School ultimately didn’t have to look to far to find a replacement for its young but highly successful athletic director John Muldoon.
St. John Paul II High School in Hyannis named today its varsity baseball coach Mark Santos as the Lions’ new athletic director, effective July 1.

St. John Paul II this morning announced that its varsity head baseball coach, Mark A. Santos, will take the athletic director reins effective July 1, 2015.
Santos, now in his sixth season as the St. John Paul II baseball helmsman, garnered considerable attention last spring when his baseball Lions captured the MIAA Division 4 State Baseball Championship, the still young school’s first such title in any sport.
Santos will follow in the footsteps of St. John Paul II’s John Muldoon, who stepped down earlier in the spring in order to pursue his graduate degree. Muldoon will continue as the St. John Paul II football coach.
“I’m so relieved,” Muldoon said. “Originally I was going to be on the (search) committee but sometimes naming your successor can be uncomfortable. I was so happy when they told me (it was Santos). He just gets it, he knows where we’ve been and what we want to do and it couldn’t happen to a better guy. I’m really excited.”
In addition to being crowned Div. 4 state baseball champs last spring, Santos’ Lions were Division 4 baseball finalists in 2013 and have been atop the Cape & Islands League since he came aboard in 2010.
“Mr. Santos will bring the same character, vision, and dedication to the overall athletic program that he has shown in baseball these past five years. He is an excellent fit for the school’s mission and has proven his success in every aspect of interscholastic athletics,” said Mr. Christopher Keavy, St. John Paul II High School Head of School.
According to Keavy, before arriving at St. John Paul II, Mr. Santos was an assistant football coach for the freshmen team at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School in 1999. He was also the Director of the Cape Cod Thunder AAU Baseball Club. Santos will continue as the varsity baseball coach for the immediate future, the school said.
“I’ve known the school as a parent of two students and as a coach. Now, I look forward to developing my commitment to the school in a new way. John Muldoon laid a strong foundation and I hope to build upon that. I am very excited to be working with all of our student athletes and I look forward to the challenge,” Santos said.
