Shields, DeSouza Lead Red Raider Laxmen over Blue Knights

EAST SANDWICH – In what has been an up-and-down season thus far for the Barnstable High boys’ lacrosse team, the Red Raiders notched a big win over the superlative Sandwich Blue Knights Saturday at Gerald F. DeConto Veterans Memorial Stadium, 12-4.

Barnstable junior attacker Liam Shields and sophomore midfielder Brener DeSouza each netted hat tricks to lead the way for the Red and White over its hosts. Senior co-captain Bo Delaney and junior midfielder Jack Pipatti each added two goals, with Pipatti firing in what would ultimately prove to be the game-winner at 6:21 of the second quarter. Senior co-captain Mike McDonough and junior midfielder Reece Hoppensteadt both added single markers for the visiting Red Raiders.

Sandwich received a pair of goals from Zack Gorrasi – the Blue Knights’ first and last tallies of a low-scoring day – while Brian Wahle and Nick Buttafuoco each added one.

Barnstable raised its record to 5-7 on the season while Sandwich fell to 7-4.

The Red Raiders hope to ride the momentum of Saturday’s victory over Sandwich in Monday’s key home game versus rival Bridgewater-Raynham. Barnstable suffered a tough, 17-9 loss on the road to the Trojans earlier in the season. The game is slated for 4:00 pm at W. Leo Shields Memorial Field.

Sandwich gears up for Tuesday (May 5) when it hits the road for North Eastham to face the Nauset Warriors in a key Atlantic Coast League match-up. Nauset is 5-6 on the season.

The proceeds of Saturday’s lacrosse game at Sandwich High’s DeConto Stadium are being donated to help fight the battle against Cystic Fibrosis and to help raise awareness about the disease. The community service effort was organized by the Sandwich High athletic department and participating lacrosse teams.
