NORTH EASTHAM – Jackie Smith scattered four hits and gave up no walks en route to another complete-game softball gem Wednesday afternoon on the road, as her St. John Paul II Lady Lions defeated their Nauset Warrior hosts, 9-0. Her battery mate Hadley Tate hammered her fifth and sixth home runs of the season to pace the offense and she went 3-4 with 3 RBI.
Smith, a senior co-captain, struck out 11 batters to raise St. John Paul II’s record to an unblemished 6-0 thus far this spring, while Nauset falls to 0-5. It was Smith’s sixth win of the season as well. She also went 2-5 at the plate and scored two runs.
St. John Paul II centerfielder Sam Carlowicz provided all the offensive firepower Smith would need, however, when she hit a two-run double in the first inning and later scored on a Madi Doyle basehit for an early 3-0 lead on the hosts. Carlowicz went 3-3, walked and scored two runs. Anna Widdison also doubled for the Lady Lions in the fifth inning.
Nauset pitcher Natalie Keagul took the loss in spite of a solid effort on the mound. She struck out two batters and went 1-3 at the plate.
Other Nauset hitters to reach safely via the basehit were Sabrina Santos, freshman Kaylee Mason who had a pair of singles.
The Warriors welcome Monomoy on Monday, April 20 at 11:00 am. St. John Paul II next faces Sturgis West today at Lombard Field in West Barnstable for a 4:00 pm game.
