Sorenson Whiffs Nine, Blue Knights Belt Falmouth Clippers

EAST SANDWICH – Sandwich High righty Riley Sorenson went the complete seven innings and struck out nine batters to pace the Blue Knights to a 10-5 win over the visiting Falmouth High Clippers Saturday afternoon at Fenton Field.

Sorenson held the Clipper bats scoreless through three innings and struck out the side in the third. He carried a 5-0 lead into the fourth frame before Falmouth staged a two-run rally on a combination of hits from Emmett Kelliher and Cam Tobey, a walk and an infield error before settling to get out of the jam with two men on. All totaled, Sandwich hammered out 11 hits against a trio of Falmouth hurlers.

Sandwich gained two of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double by senior shortstop Will Bennett (2-3, two RBI) to make it 7-2 but Falmouth staged another rally in the top of the fifth.

Mike Couhig, who was slotted in the designated hitter spot to start the game and later came on in relief, belted a two-run, two-out homer in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-4, but Sorenson did not let it get to him.

He blanked Falmouth in the sixth and allowed one more in the seventh but two runs in the sixth by Sandwich pinch-hitter Pat Tierney was enough insurance to close it out.

“Riley (Sorenson) was strong for seven innings,” said Sandwich head coach Brian Tomasini. “(He) got some key strike outs and ground balls when needed.”

The Blue Knights stand at an even 2-2 on the season while Falmouth drops to 2-4 after this key Atlantic Coast League contest.

Sandwich leadoff man Brady Doherty was critical in making the wheels turn for the Sandwich lineup throughout the affair. The scrappy second sacker went 3-4 on the day with a pair of doubles, one of them a two-run screamer.

“Our leadoff man set the table all day,” said Sandwich head coach Brian Tomasini. “He had two doubles, stole a couple bags, drove in runs and scored three times. (It was an) all-around great game from Doherty.”

Sandwich will face Barnstable High on the road on Wednesday (April 22) at 11:00 am while Falmouth returns to action on Monday (April 20) at 11:00, also against the Red Raiders.
