St. John Paul II High School’s girls’ tennis team (1-2) picked up its first win of the spring campaign Thursday afternoon by defeating the Mashpee High Falcons, 5-0, in spite of blustery

Lions’ senior co-captain Haylee Whiteley led the charge in her victory over Mashpee sophomore Paulina Remis Serna, 6-0, 6-1, in number one singles. Lions’ junior co-captain Emily Canzano followed in like fashion, downing Mashpee junior captain Rory Sullivan by the same scores, 6-0, 6-1.
At number three singles, St. John Paul II’s Julia Grady readily defeated Mashpee freshman Ashley Geiszler, 6-0, 6-0.
The Lady Lions did not hesitate to continue that same success in both number one and number two doubles, as both St. John Paul II doubles pairs blanked their Falcon opponents, 6-0, 6-0.
Co-captain Jacqueline Germani and Rachel McLellan teamed up at number one doubles for St. John Paul II and defeated the team of 8th grader Caroline Henley and Maia Fudala. In number two doubles, it was the Lions’ Allison Santos and Grace Sohoel-Goldberg over Sophia Snider and McKenzie Moniz.
The Lions take on an unbeaten Martha’s Vineyard team on Saturday at home.
The victory was first-year head coach Katie Dombrowski’s first career varsity tennis win at St. John Paul II.
