Taunton — It’s never too late to get that first victory.
The St. John Paul II Lions boys’ swim team did just that last night at the Taunton Boys & Girls Club, defeating Coyle Cassidy on the road, 39-37.

St. John Paul II Lions’ swimmer Sarah Dorman turned in a pair of first place finishes last night versus Coyle Cassidy, but the girls’ team fell, 48-44. The Lions’ boys, though, picked up their first win of the season.

“It was awesome,” said Lions’ head coach Jena Brown, and added that it was the second boys’ swim team victory in school history but first “full team” victory for the boys ever. Last year was the first season for the Lions, but only three boys participated in the varsity program.
“We won last year with only three members but this is our first full team win,” she said.
The Lions’ Chris Bresnahan won the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly to lead the pack. Billy Huffnagle added a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley while Jake Catarius won the 500-yard freestyle.
“He did awesome, he’s a new swimmer,” Coach Brown said. “And that’s an extremely hard race.”
The Lions’ boys also took a first place in the 200-yard intermediate relay, a finish that likely put the team over the edge for the win. St. John Paul II is now 1-5 on the season.
The Lions’ girls did not fare quite as well as their counterpart boys did, however.
The Blue & Gold girls lost to Coyle Cassidy, 48-44, but nevertheless still turned out some fairly rock solid performances.
Sarah Dorman, who Coach Brown said led all of the Lions’ swimmers throughout the day and in spite of the girls’ loss, took first place in the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke. Kristen Hayes added a first place finish for the Lions in the 50-yard freestyle as did Kerry Bresnahan who took first in the 100-yard butterfly. the Blue & Gold girls 400-yard freestyle relay squad also took home a first place finish.
