Sandwich High’s number one and number two singles’ players notched victories over the visiting Lions, but that was all the Blue Knights could muster as the guests took number three singles and both doubles’ matches for the win.

Sandwich High’s Liz Siranosian defeated Lions’ senior co-captain Haylee Whiteley, 6-2, 6-3, and Blue Knights’ teammate Kay Stanton took number two singles from Lions junior co-captain Emily Canzano, 6-2, 6-1, but that’s when the Lions turned things around.

St. John Paul sophomore Allison Santos won number three singles by defeating Allison Bryant, 6-2, 6-2, and then both Lions’ doubles teams got the job done for the guests.

“Allison’s quick straight set victory was a testament to her ability to manipulate the point with varied paces and spin,” said head coach Katie Dombrowski. “Haylee and Emily played tough opponents, but fought for every point. Haylee battled with her unbelievable consistency and Emily with unparalleled tenacity.”

Senior –co-captain Jacqueline Germani  and senior Julia Grady defeated  Jenna Phillips and Amy Bolton, 6-2, 6-1 and juniors Grace Sohoel- Goldberg and Megan Moran teamed up to defeat Megan Greenhalgh and Abby Hart, 6-1, 6-2.

“Both doubles teams played beautifully and aggressively from start to finish,” Dombrowski said. “All four players set up the points perfectly to end the points with strong put-aways.”

Sandwich is at Nauset on Tuesday (May 26) in an Atlantic Coast League match-up, while St. John Paul II awaits the postseason on June 4.
