MARSTONS MILLS – The St. John Paul II (16-1) boys’ tennis team earned every bit of its 4-1 MIAA Division 3 South Sectional victory over Monomoy (10-10) Thursday afternoon at the Dick Norman Tennis Courts, while both powerhouse Barnstable High girls’ and boys’ teams captured wins across town to advance in the postseason as well.

The upstart, never-say-die Falmouth High School girls’ tennis team (10-7) also won Thursday afternoon, as it defeated Milton in the MIAA Div. 2 South Sectional opening round, 4-1.

MIAA Div. 3 South Boys’ Tennis, First Round: St. John Paul II 4 – Monomoy 1

The St. John Paul II boys’ tennis team (16-1), seeded 4th in Division 3 South, lived up to the hype with a decisive, albeit hard-earned, 4-1 win over the 13th seeded Monomoy Regional High School boys’ team.

Cooper Tomchik, only a sophomore, defeated Monomoy’s senior captain Logan DeSouza, 6-0, 6-4 in a very hard-played match at first singles, followed by a win from Oliver “Ollie” Dyche at number two singles over junior Matt Neiser. Neiser gave Dyche a run for his money and prompted Lions’ head coach Joseph Gaudet to tell Dyche to “pick it up.” Dyche defeated Neiser, 6-1, 6-3.

At number three singles, Lions’ senior co-captain Jon Logie played fiercely and maintained his unbeaten record this season at 17-0, as he took down Monomoy’s Caleb Pettit, only an 8th grader, 6-3, 6-1.

At number one doubles, the Lions’ Mike and Andrew Logie (yes, all brothers), defeated Monomoy’s Rudy Fratus and Josh Goodrich, 6-4, 6-1, in a hard-fought contest, but the lengthiest affair of the day was the one that seemed at the outset to be nothing more than a perfunctory gesture. That’s because the number two doubles match-up – even with an already guaranteed Lions’ victory – was played as if it were the grand slam of tennis. Monomoy freshmen Nick Russell and Parker Firmin defeated the Lions’ Sean Pratt and Norman Carlson in that battle, 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 10-8, in a tiebreaker.

The Lions advance now to the MIAA Division 3 South quarterfinals on Monday (June 8) at home against #5 seed Fairhaven (14-5) at 4:00 pm. Monomoy’s season ended with the loss.

Falmouth freshman phenom Julia Moskal and her older sister, junior co-captain Marysia Moskal, won number one and two singles sets, respectively. But Medfield took the rest of the day, beginning with Alex Papantonis at number three singles in her defeat of Nauset’s Haley Navarro, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3).
