OSTERVILLE – Still in the postseason hunt and in need of just one more win to clinch a postseason berth, the Cape Cod Academy boys’ basketball team fell short last night to the visiting Millis High (9-9) squad, 58-49.

Cape Cod Academy senior co-captain Henry Zesse poured in 13 points and tore down 21 rebounds but Millis proved too strong in a 58-49 loss last night in Osterville.

Twice last night on “Senior Night” the hosts had a late chance to tie the game but both times the shots they had would not drop as the visitors turned things up in the fourth quarter and outscored the Seahawks, 19-14.
Cape Cod Academy’s senior co-captain Johnny Hatem was the game’s high scorer with 18 points, while fellow senior co-captain Henry Zesse poured in 13 points and tore down 21 rebounds. Jack Massari added eight points off the bench.
Ryan Smith and Ivan Arkhipov each had 12 points for Millis, in spite of Zesse’s clear dominance inside the paint.
The bottom line for the Academy boys was getting the ball in the basket. The Seahawks shot just 16-52 from the field (30.76%) and once they fell behind the visitors could not come back to match things up.
The two teams were tied 10-10 in the first quarter, but in the second frame Millis ran away with things in terms of being able to convert on its possessions, while the Seahawks struggled to make the ball fall through. At halftime, Millis led 26-17.
Cape Cod Academy did stage a stellar comeback attempt in the second half, coming as close as a 37-35 deficit with the ball in its hands, but a mid-range jumper went in and out that would have tied it and Millis erased that momentum by converting on the other end of the floor.
The Seahawks still have a chance to clinch a postseason spot and have four games remaining to do so. They need just one to secure a postseason visit. They head to Harwich tomorrow for a make-up game against Cape Cod Tech at 2:00 pm and then face Nantucket, Sturgis East and Holbrook next week.
