Trimble’s Girls Net Win Vs. Clippers; Barnstable Sweeps D-Y; Nauset and Vineyarders Take Wins

EAST SANDWICH – It all basically came down to the number two doubles pair, Jenna Phillips and Amy Bolton.

In one of the closest girls’ tennis matches on the Cape this spring, the host Sandwich Lady Knights defeated the visiting Falmouth Clipper girls, 3-2, and with the win the Knights climbed to 7-4 on the season. Falmouth fell to 4-5 with the hard-luck loss.

Phillips and Bolton defeated Falmouth’s Emily Gedney and Emily Freedman in the first set, 6-1, and then barely eked out a victory in the second set, 7-6 (8-6), in an overall match that was basically tied at 2-2.

The Clippers’ number one doubles team comprised of Paige Meade and Lindsey Shea, picked up a win but it wasn’t even remotely a simple one. While Meade and Shea defeated Allison Bryant and Taylor Eccleston in the first set, 6-2, Eccleston and Bryant rebounded in the second set for a win, 6-3. Shea and Meade prevailed, however, in a 6-3 tiebreaker.

Falmouth freshman Julia Moskal notched a victory in number one singles play, as she defeated Sandwich ace Grace Tanguilig, 6-1, 6-1, but then Tanguilig’s teammates picked her up at number two and number three singles.

In number two singles, Liz Siranosian defeated Marysia Moskal, 6-0, 6-2 and then Kay Stanton defeated the Clippers’ Emily Maness, 6-2, 6-2.

Sandwich heads to Dennis-Yarmouth Friday for another Atlantic Coast League match-up, while Falmouth hopes to rebound the same day at home when it welcomes a very tough Nauset Warriors’ squad.

Barnstable Tennis Teams Both Beat D-Y Dolphins, Red Raider Boys Remain Undefeated

The Red Raiders continued to mix up their lineup to garner valuable experience heading into the postseason and the plan continued to work Wednesday as the Barnstable net men handed Dennis-Yarmouth (2-8) a 4-1 win to remain undefeated at 11-0.

But the hosts did not go down quietly on Station Avenue, as nearly each set of each match played was a contested one.

In number one doubles action, Trevor Blaze paired up with Brian Gagnon for a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Adam Cunningham and Tim Canning, while Barnstable’s number two doubles duo, Curtis Balthazard and Jacob Goldstein downed Dennis and Kevin Liu, 6-2, and 7-6 (8-6).

At number one singles, Gabe Rourke dropped a hard-fought battle against D-Y’s Max Allen, splitting sets at 6-2, then 4-6, before Allen prevailed in the tiebreaker, 10-7.

At number two singles, Barnstable’s Nate Medeiros was victorious over Jared Stone, 6-3, 6-1, and then Jackson Burbic rounded it out at number three singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Trevor Work.

The Red Raiders will host BC High on Friday and top man Sonny Bisazza is expected to be back in action for that match.

Barnstable High’s Tyler Shibles is the number one seed in the MIAA Individual South Sectionals at Durfee High on Saturday and sophomore Max Francis is seeded number three. Barnstable’s number one and number two doubles teams are also the number one and number two seeds, although it has yet to be determined which of the many talented Red Raider doubles players will be on tap with the exception, of course being senior co-captain Donnie Brodd and his usual sidekick Cooper Blaze. Matt Kaski and Coper Hesse or possibly Daniel Dettinger-Klemm could be in the mix, too. The MIAA South Sectional semi-finals  will be hosted at Barnstable High on Sunday.

The Barnstable High girls’ tennis team climbed to 11-2 on the season with a 5-0 win at home versus the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins as the guests fell to 2-10 in the non-league contest.

Red Raider number one doubles team Taya Berler and Michaela Cornwall defeated Rebecca Khackikian and Anna Bach, 6-1, 6-1, followed by a win at number two doubles from Olivia Berler and Angelique Gray, 6-2, 6-0 over Olivia VanLare and Nelina Behne.

Lauren Persson defeated Virginia Liu at number one singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Katie Tynan and Emma Doe both followed with identical victories at number two and three singles, respectively. Tynan defeated Victoria Liu and Doe beat Paula DeSouza.

The Red Raiders head to Osterville Friday to face Cape Cod Academy. Dennis-Yarmouth welcomes Sandwich, also on Friday, at 4:00 pm.

Martha’s Vineyard wins two over Coyle Cassidy, 5-0, 5-0

Call the final scores a bizarre fluke if you will, but make no mistake, the Martha’s Vineyard girls’ tennis team is anything but lucky.

Because they are really that good.

The Vineyarders notched two wins Wednesday afternoon against Coyle Cassidy as it was agreed upon that the schools would play a doubleheader. Using the precise same lineup for both matches, Vineyard head coach Kat Roberts saw her girls defeat Coyle-Cassidy by identical scores in every single set and match.

At first singles, Samantha Potter defeated Grace Waz, 6-0, 6-0 – and then Potter defeated Waz a second time by the same score in the second match.

M-V number two singles’ stalwart Lizzie Williamson defeated Abbie McCabe, 6-0, 6-0, and at number three singles, Charlotte Potter defeated Laura Mason, 6-0, 6-0. Again, those scores were repeated a second time in the nightcap.

M-V first doubles team Avery Hazell and Madison McBride beat Becca Santos and Alex Thibault, 6-3, 6-0, and at number two doubles, Amadine Muniz and Lia Potter defeated Ailyn Santos and Rachel McLaughlin, 6-1, 6-1.

The Vineyard remains the top team in the region at 13-0 with both wins.
