ORLEANS – The strong and talented Nauset Regional High School girls’ tennis team knew it had its work cut out yesterday, but what they ran into against the visiting Martha’s Vineyarders was a veritable buzz saw.
The still undefeated Vineyard girls handed the Atlantic Coast League champion Nauset girls a 5-0 loss Thursday afternoon at the Orleans Elementary School, revealing that indeed the island net women may very well be the toughest team in the region this spring. The Vineyarders are now 16-0 and welcome Falmouth today (Friday, May 29).
As per her usual, Samantha Potter captured the victory at number one singles, but not without tremendous effort against Nauset’s ace, Allie Dadoly. Potter took the first set, 6-2, but then the Warriors’ senior co-captain turned it up in the second set before finally succumbing to the Vineyard star, 7-6 (7-5).
M-V number two singles player Kat Roberts followed suit with a win over Nika Dadoly, 6-0, 6-1 and Lizzie Williamson took number three singles from Haley Navarro, 6-3, 6-2.
Of her ace, Samantha Potter, Vineyard assistant coach Liz Roberts said “she was determined!”
At number one doubles, M-V’s Josie Iadicicco and Charlotte Potter defeated Nauset senior co-captains Anna Godshalk and Haley Benz, 6-3, 6-4 and then Amadine Muniz and Madison McBride defeated Taylor Wilkins and Carlisle Wheeler at number two doubles, 6-1, 6-1.
Duxbury Green Dragons Spoil Barnstable Boys’ Perfect Run
Missing MIAA Division 1 South Sectional champion Tyler Shibles from the lineup, the Barnstable Red Raiders nevertheless had yet to experience quite as much of the challenge they faced Thursday afternoon on the road at the hands of Duxbury.
Yet without Shibles playing number one, the Barnstable High boys’ tennis team saw its 16-game win streak and undefeated season fall by the wayside as the hosts outpaced them, 3-2. For the first time in recent memory, the Old Colony League champion Red Raiders lost all three singles matches and for all intents and purposes each match came down to a tiebreaker set.
Barnstable senior co-captain Sonny Bisazza, who defeated Duxbury’s Fred Clifford 6-2 in the first set, then fell 6-4 and 6-3. Sophomore Max Francis pretty much followed that same pattern only Francis fell in the first set to freshman Ethan Hall, 6-1, came back with a 6-4 win and then fell, 6-2.
At number three singles, Cooper Hesse dropped the first set, 7-5, won the second set by the same score (7-5) and then lost the match in a 6-4 finale to sophomore Jack Simon.
The Barnstable doubles teams held their own with two victories as Donnie Brodd and Cooper Blaze relatively breezed by Duxbury’s Tyler Caslin and Matt Feldman, 6-0, 6-3, but then the number two doubles match proved as equally tough as the singles matches had been.
Barnstable’s Gabe Rourke and Rafe DeSouza, a sophomore battling in his first varsity start this season, defeated Pat Burke and Kris Kalous, 6-3 and 7-6 (7-3).
The Red Raiders now await the postseason tournament seedings on Monday and will likely by the top Division 1 South Sectional seed when those pairings are announced. Duxbury is a Division 2 program and the Green Dragons finished the regular season a perfect 18-0.
