On Valentine’s Day, Don’t Forget The Wine

“Wine is the most civilized thing in the world.” — Ernest Hemingway

There it is! Proof that I have some civilized qualities… I like wine. I like wine a lot. I am not, however an expert. Like many wine drinkers, I know what I like. I rarely stray from my well-worn path to the bottles of crisp Sauvignon Blanc.

With Valentine’s Day approaching, I was asked to suggest some good wines for the impending holiday. Not an easy task, so I reached out to a couple of friends who really are experts in the field of mood-setting spirits. I called my old friend Andrea Pendergast at Cape Cod Package store in Centerville who in turn looped in Diane Slater.

The wonderful thing about wine is that you can find one for any situation, any palate and any emotion you may have. Diane helped my find a series of wines, perfect wine for any Valentine’s Day scenario.Cape Cod Package Store - Wine

ROMANTIC: Imagine a quiet candlelight dinner in the privacy of your own home, or a cabin in the woods. Diane suggested Two Hands – Sexy Beast Cabernet Sauvignon, McLaren Vale, Australia – ($29.99). In Diane’s own words: “Need I say more…. If romancing and you want a red that is as bold and assertive as your lover, yet refined enough to cling softly, sensitively on your palate this is the wine. Serve this with steak and you may end dinner sooner than expected……”

GIRL’S NIGHT OUT: Because sometimes you are single on the big day, but you still want to have fun with your best friends. Don’t be intimidated by the name: Pazo San Mauro Albariño, Rias Baixes, Spain – ($17.00) Diane describes this one with “bright mineral & citrus notes, with stone fruit and the finish is softer and a bit more rounded around the edges –it begs a second sip…. Girls Night when it is just fun to pound some white wine and laugh at your disintegrating pronunciation of this wine’s region…..”

WHEN THE LAST THING YOU WANT TO SEE IS ANOTHER HAPPY COUPLE: Look, we have all been there. It doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate with a little bubbly! Have you tried Henri Giraud Espirit Blanc de Blanc Champagne –($69.99)! According to Diane, this champagne has “beautiful artisan bubbles that caress the oysters you may have it with it. A fine bead, showing much clarity and finesse. Bready notes reveal a baker’s touch –sublime. A must bottle for the person who claims not to have had a failed marriage inasmuch as a successful divorce!”

The Cape Cod Package Store is located on the corner of Phinney’s Lane and Rte 28 in Centerville. It’s one of those family-owned and operated businesses in my neighborhood. Andrea and I grew up together, so she is my “go-to” friend when I am looking for a unique wine or want to try something new. Diane Slater is the Wine Buyer for Cape Cod Package Store (and my new best friend)! There are several wonderful package stores across the Cape. If you are looking for advice on the perfect pairing for your Valentine’s celebrations (or protests), don’t be afraid to walk up to the counter and ask for help! Nearly all of these stores have someone on staff who has sampled every wine they carry… And probably every beer, too – in case you prefer a different kind of suds at your celebrations!

Cheers!
