Updated: Barnstable Police make arrest after armed robbery at ATM in Hyannis


HYANNIS – Barnstable Police are investigating a reported armed robbery late Thursday morning. The incident was reported near the JFK Library off Main Street. The suspect allegedly showed a firearm. An active investigation and search for the suspect is underway.

From Chatham Police: On Friday, December 2, 2022, that Chatham Police Department received information that a 20-year-old male, who was wanted for an armed robbery in Barnstable on Thursday, December 01, where a firearm was used, was at a residence at 54 Stony Hill Road, Chatham.

There was an active arrest warrant issued for that suspect. The suspect was a 20-year-old male with a Dennis address.

Based upon the nature of the crime suspected, Chatham Police, and members of the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council’s SWAT Team, along with Barnstable Police, responded to 54 Stony Hill Road to locate the suspected male and serve the arrest warrant. Charges on the warrant were: Armed Robbery, Assault by Dangerous Weapon and Larceny under $1000.00

Due to the nature of this call and out of caution, the staff at Monomoy Regional Middle School was advised, and the staff halted all outside school activities.

On arrival, law enforcement was able to contact the suspect by phone, and the suspect agreed to exit the residence. He was arrested by Barnstable Police without incident, and transported to Barnstable PD. The scene was clear at 01:30 pm.

At no time was the public in danger.

From Barnstable Police: On Thursday at approximately 11:30 AM, a 59-year-old male resident of Hyannis was attempting to use his bank card at an ATM located inside a local convenience store on Main St. Hyannis. The male was having difficulty withdrawing money and sought assistance using his card. He was helped by 20-year-old Chatham resident Gabriel Leite. After withdrawing money from the ATM, the victim left the convenience store and walked to the nearby Town Hall Parking lot. Gabriel Leite had followed the victim from the convenience store and then produced a firearm and robbed the man of the money he had just withdrawn. Leite then ran off towards Main St. after the robbery.

Barnstable Police Officers responded to Main St. and attempted to locate Leite, however, he had fled the area and they were unable to find the suspect. Upon further investigation, Barnstable Patrol Officer Lobianco applied for a warrant at Barnstable District Court for Armed Robbery,
Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, and Larceny Under $1,200 for Leite.

On Friday at approximately 1 PM, the Cape Cod SWAT team, with assistance from the Chatham Police Department, arrested Gabriel Leite for the robbery.

Leite was transported back to the Barnstable Police Department where he was booked. He was then transported to Barnstable District Court where he was arraigned on the above listed charges and held without the possibility of bail.
