STORM TEAM: Downed wire closes Route 6 in Orleans, multi roads flooded, power outages, structure fires


ORLEANS
– A large wire was reported down on Route 6 in Orleans. Traffic was at a standstill as the road was impassible between Exit 12 and the Rotary in both directions. Mile, a CWN reader submitted the photo above.

David, A CWN reader forwarded this photo of cars stranded in flooding along Route 6A in Orleans;

A severe thunderstorm warning and flood warning were issued and several reports of road flooding as well as a few flooded basements have been coming in from the Orleans area.

As of 10:30 AM, Eversource reported nearly 1,000 customers out in Eastham with about 400 out in Orleans.

10:40 update: Rock Harbor Road closed due to multiple wires and at least one tree down in Orleans. A flag pole at the Local Scoop on Route 6A in Orleans snapped and snagged in phone wires. Eastham Fire checking two possible lightning strikes to residences. Brewster Fire also dealing with some flooding.

11:00 AM update: Tree and wire damage reported along Monument Road in Orleans. Eversource has updated the outage in Eastham to about 1,100 customers, 500 in Orleans, and now nearly 2,000 in Brewster. Flooding and down tree limbs reported along Eldredge Parkway in Orleans.

11:20 AM update: Structure fire at 275 Red Top Road in Brewster with fire showing from the roof. Another structure fire in Orleans at 18 Overlook Circle with heavy fire showing. Both presumed to be from lightning strikes.

11:45 AM update: Firefighters continue to work at both structure fires. CWN’s Craig Chadwick sent in the above photo and video below from the Overlook Circle fire in Orleans. Heavy charring can be seen in the cock-loft at far left of the large 2 1/2 story house. Latest power outage report: Eastham 767, Orleans 447, Brewster 1,431.

12:15 PM update: Another cell is visible on radar about to affect the same Brewster-Orleans-Eastham area with more heavy rain. 4.55 inches of rain already reported in Orleans. Power outages holding steady from last report.

12:45 PM update: Both fires are reported under control. Latest power outage report-Eastham 845, Orleans 719, Brewster 1,443.

1:15 PM update: The wire across Route 6 in Orleans has been lifted and traffic is starting to move again. No change in power outages. CWN’s Jake O’Callaghan sent in this video from the Red Top Road fire in Brewster:

1:30 PM update: Another structure fire in Brewster at 263 Sea Pines Drive at a condo complex. A second alarm has been struck for that location.

2:00 PM update: Craig Chadwick checking in from Sea Pines Drive fire which is now under control:

2:15 PM update: Yet another structure fire in Orleans reported to be a barn type building at 87 Beach Road.

2:30 PM update: 4.37 inches of rain in Brewster. As reported earlier, 4.45 inches in Orleans! Most of the Brewster power outage has been restored. Still 620 out in Eastham and 557 in Orleans. The Beach Road fire in Orleans is under control.

4:00 PM update: Eastham Firefighters called to 415 Meetinghouse Road for a reported gas leak in the basement. Officials ordered power cut to the building to reduce the possibility of an explosion until National Grid could fix the problem. It was not immediately clear if the leak was weather related. As of this hour about 900 Eversource customers are still with out power in the Brewster, Orleans and Eastham region.
