Fire breaks out on roof of Marine Biological Lab

– Firefighters ordered a second alarm on arrival at a fire reported at the Marine Biological Lab.

Falmouth Fire reports that units their were dispatched to the Lillie Laboratory in Woods Hole for a building fire. Engine 22 arrived to find smoke showing from the roof of the five story building.

A 2nd alarm was quickly struck, being additional Falmouth apparatus and an Engine from Joint Base Cape Cod to the scene. Crews located a stubborn fire burning under multiple old roofing layers. The fire was extinguished in about 45 mins.

One Firefighter was evaluated at the scene for heat stress but there were no other injuries. The cause of the fire is accidental. Mutual aid from Mashpee, Cotuit, Bourne and Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire Departments provided station coverage and handled other calls in Falmouth during the fire.
