From Chatham Fire: On Wednesday May 27th at approximately 11:10 AM the Chatham Fire Department was dispatched to 126 Chipping Stone Road for a motor vehicle crash. Chatham Police officers arrived on scene and reported an SUV down a steep embankment with the driver entrapped in the vehicle.
Upon arrival, Chatham Fire personnel initially worked to provide medical care to the patient while crews also stabilized the vehicle. Rescue chains were deployed and anchored to prevent the vehicle from falling down the embankment as aid was rendered to the patient.
Chatham Firefighters had to use the jaws of life extrication tools as well as chainsaws and a strut-stabilization system to gain access to the patient. Boston Med-Flight was requested to Chatham Airport due to the mechanism of the crash. A full department recall was initiated as well as an ambulance from Harwich Fire Department. After a lengthy extrication, the patient was removed from the vehicle and the decision was made to ground transport to Cape Cod Hospital.
A second patient had self-extricated from the car and sustained a non-life threatening leg injury. Harwich Fire transported this patient to Cape Cod Hospital.
Our thanks to the Chatham Police Department and the Harwich Fire Department for their assistance at this difficult scene. The crash is under investigation by the Chatham Police Department.
