Advice For Grads: 10 Things They Didn’t Tell You In School

Today is your day. You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away!
Dr. Seuss, “Oh the Places You’ll Go.”

June is graduation season and on Cape Cod, the area’s high schools are sending seniors out into the world just about every weekend.

This week seniors at Nauset Regional High, Dennis-Yarmouth and Sandwich High will don those neatly pressed caps and gowns, march through the hallowed halls of their school, walk across a stage, receive a document that in fancy Latin words says: “You did it!,” and head out into the great abyss that is, “the real world.”

Graduation is also a time when any last-minute gift shopper (and full disclosure, I include myself in that group) will make a split-second decision — a picture frame, a bouquet of flowers, or a copy of Dr. Seuss’ “Oh The Places You’ll Go” — for the perfect grad gift.

While the latter is truly filled with some great advice for recent grads, in today’s ever-changing world, the wise words of our beloved Dr. Seuss may not be enough.

Here’s what recent grads have said is the best advice they can give the Class of 2016:

Put Yourself Out There

Picture 3 of 12

Go out! While curling up on the couch and watching NetFlix is a nice thing to do every now and then, it is not a good way to live. Get out of the house and meet people! Missing your old friends from school? Join a club or a group of people with similar interests as yours. You like books? Join a book club. You like to play sports? Start a club team. There’s something for everyone out there and you’re not going to find friends unless you go out and meet them face to face by yourself. Once you do, boredom and NetFlix will feel like a thing of the past. The same logic also applies to careers. Put yourself out there in the workforce. Send your resume to potential employers and keep searching for interesting jobs. There’s a career that will fit your personality -- but only if you get yourself out there.
