Breaking the Bowling Alley Stereotype

Taking your family or a group of friends bowling has been a fun and favorite activity for decades. It’s an experience that brings people together. You can’t help but have a good time! But not all bowling alleys are alike. The Lanes Bowl & Bistro, in Mashpee Commons, isn’t your typical bowling alley – it’s an uncommon bowling experience.

The Lanes Bowl & Bistro is designed to intentionally break some of the stereotypes associated with traditional bowling venues. “Absent are the plastic benches and rows of video games associated with old style alleys. That’s been replaced now by comfortable seating, coffee tables and lane-side wait service,” noted the Lanes’ Marketing Manager, Kathleen Speers. At The Lanes, you can have a great family-friendly experience during the day, and a fun, 21+ environment at night after 10 p.m.

Gone are the days of just bowling a few strings and heading home (although you can certainly still do that, if you like). The Lanes is a boutique bowling venue developed by Bobby Byrne Management Corp., and it offers an innovative, multi-tiered concept that combines upscale casual dining, bowling, entertainment and events – all under one roof.

The multi-purpose floorplan at The Lanes includes the bistro, which offers an excellent food menu, locally-brewed beers on tap, and delicious, creative cocktails, and has enough room for live entertainment; the 10 ten-pin bowling lanes with party lighting, music and more; and a seasonal outdoor bar, cafe and bocce court. You can enjoy the company of adults while your kids bowl nearby!

The Lanes has also chosen to operate in a greener, more eco-friendly way. Many aspects of the décor are recycled or repurposed. For example, the tables in the bowling alley were crafted at Powerhouse Industrial in Western Mass. using planks, pipes and fittings from old mills and factories from around New England. The bistro bar stools and chairs were made in Pennsylvania, and feature seats and backs woven out of surplus automotive seatbelts once destined for the landfill. The bar, counter and table tops are made of recycled paper.

According to Dawn Dupre, General Manager at The Lanes Bowl & Bistro, “The bowling pins have strings attached, instead, which negates the need (and the cost of electricity) for an automated pin setter.” The string has no interference with the pins when the ball hits them and, at the end of each throw, the machine pulls the pins back into a rack and resets the pins that weren’t knocked down, as well. Feel free to relax on the comfortable couches, along with coffee tables and high-top tables, which have replaced the plastic bowling alley seating of yesteryear.

Additionally, The Lanes offers the Bloody Good Sunday Brunch! “Choose from all your favorite brunch foods AND your choice of a mimosa, a Bloody Mary or Grady’s Lane 43, all for $12,” said Dupre. “This really is a great Sunday brunch. Where else can you find that for the price?”

A great place to spend those warm summer evenings in the outdoor patio area, which offers a fire pit, corn hole tournaments and an outside bar. Each weekend The Lanes hosts local bands (which they typically post on their Facebook page). It’s the perfect place to hang out with friends or coworkers at night, but get there early – the bar area is very popular and really gets packed when the weather allows.

“The Lanes’ bar opens up to the outdoor patio, including high-top bar chairs and a fire pit with a wrap-around couch!” Speers added. “The outdoor bar is sheltered from rain and other conditions and we even have heaters for those cooler nights. With full bar service inside and out, It’s become a very popular gathering spot for outdoor cocktails on a summer night. The patio is also dog friendly for well-behaved and leased pooches. Beer, bocce, bowling… that’s how we roll!”
