It’s estimated that Alzheimer’s and other Dementia related illnesses affect over 10,000 individuals and caregivers (most of which are family members) on Cape Cod. Caring for a family member can be devastating. Coming to terms with the illness and understanding how to take care of your family member is only half the battle. Caregiving can be exhausting physically, emotionally, and mentally. Isolation can easily set in when you feel like no one can understand what your situation.
There are a few groups on Cape Cod looking to make a difference. Support groups have been proven to reduce the likelihood of caregivers developing depression. Those living with dementia are more likely to delay nursing home placement if caregivers attend support groups.
