Hello, My Name Is: Emma Dubner

Welcome to our new feature, “Hello My Name Is…”. In the coming weeks we will have the opportunity to spend a little time getting to know people in our community. As you know, the best way to learn about someone is to ask questions. In this series we will ask ten questions to different individuals so that we can know the folks who live with us here on Cape Cod.

Hello, My Name Is Emma Dubner

Occupation: Registered Nurse, Musician (The Ticks), Music Teacher, Junior Roller Derby Coach and Mom

What was your first paying job?

My first paying job was a teacher at an afterschool program and summer camp for elementary aged kids. I actually babysat at an even younger age, but never declared those wages….most of that cash went straight to candy and magazines.

When was the last time you laughed really hard?

Last time I laughed really hard…..was at band rehearsal with The Ticks. The guitarist has been trying to get us to cover this song from the 70’s Aleah. Spoiler alert; the song is super cheesy and borderline awful. It definitely has some sleazy lyrics and our drummer, Julia, hates the song and won’t cover it. This argument has gone on for YEARS. And then….I’m not sure how it happened (I think Sue, our bass player, used the MeToo movement as an argument point?!) And all of the sudden Julia agreed and we are playing the song!! I had to laugh because of the irony.

A close tie would be when I hit one of my teammates in the sternum during a game of roller derby and snots went flying out of her nose….because it was gross and funny.

Did you grow up on the Cape?

YES! I did grow up on the Cape and I’m glad to still be here. There’s something magical about growing up in one place and seeing it change through your life and being a working part of that community. Roots are good.

Where is your ‘go-to’ spot for a cup of chowder?

Being a cape girl, my OWN homemade chowder is my go to, but if I don’t feel like shucking…I’d pick chowder from the Seaside Pub on Main St Hyannis because it’s really good.

Do you have a favorite non-profit group here on the Cape?

An organization near and dear to my heart Cape Cod Junior Roller Derby. Last year, along with a few dedicated parents CCJRD was created with a mission to encourage young athletes 7-17 in teamwork, fitness, and health through roller skating skills and the exciting fast paced game of junior roller derby. We are also fostering a sense of community and responsibility. This program is for every level of fitness, every body type and gender. Roller derby teaches you how to fall and get back up, something I think everyone needs to learn.

Cod Collaborative Arts Network is also an amazing nonprofit organization of volunteers and families looking to provide music and art to adults with special needs. It has created some of the most wonderful and unique programs like an open mics, art gallery and acting classes. I attended their monthly open mic and it was the most fun I’ve had all winter.

What is the one thing you love to do that surprises people the most?

I am a roller derby queen! I was 2018 captain of the woman’s traveling team at Cape Cod Roller Derby. I am currently on the state all-stars, Team Massachusetts, and we are heading to the Battle of the States! Cape Cod will host games at Cape Cod Community College in May thru September. I have found, I am more graceful on roller skates than I am on my own two feet!

In a parallel universe, what would you be doing?

I would hopefully be doing everything I am doing now, except I would have a moustache…..or weird glasses.

What person had the greatest influence on you and why?

The greatest influence on my life would be my grandfather. I was blessed with so many amazing mentors that I don’t want to diminish any of them, but he was an amazing guy with a sense of ingenuity and good, quiet humor. My grandfather taught me how to keep my feet clean and dry like a good soldier. He also introduced me to jazz and big band and musicals. He taught me baseball and played catch with me and always took me to the beach. Most of all, he reminded me how good the beach is.

If I looked in your refrigerator right now, what would I see?

There’s a giant block of cheddar cheese, homemade chicken stock, random veggies and ginger tea cooling because I’m trying to not drink soda any more.

If you could go out on a boat fishing for a day, who would you bring?

All kidding aside, the one person I’d like to go fishing with would have to be Prince. He is a fascination to me because of his musicianship and stage presence. I bet he would also be capable on the water.

We are always looking for new people to feature in “Hello, My Name Is…”. If you know an interesting member of the Cape community, please send us their name:[email protected]. When possible, please include their contact information and a little about them.

Thank you!
