The New England Fishery Management Council is meeting in Portland to consider quotas for several species of commercial fish. One of the species is the Gulf of Maine cod, which was once the backbone of the New England fishing industry.

The council voted to reduce the total allowable Gulf of Maine cod catch limit from 1,550 metric tons to 386 metric tons last year. It was 8,000 metric tons per year in the early 2000s.

The council might set catch limits for cod for the next few years at its meeting. Georges Bank cod are another imperiled species that is on the council’s agenda.
